Chapter 15 - The Housekeeper's Last Shift.

The first light of morning reached Vale House while investigators moved quietly through the foyer.

The broken glass had been pushed into neat piles.

The smoke had cleared.

The chandelier still burned above the marble floor as if the mansion were pretending the night had never happened.

Adrian stood beside the same serving tray Claire had abandoned hours earlier.

He held the Northstar ledger under one arm.

Victor Sloane and Simon Cross were gone from the estate under official escort while their statements and records were reviewed.

Margaret remained in the library with counsel, finally answering questions she had avoided for years.

Nolan was coordinating the surviving security team and discovering how thoroughly the network had been compromised.

Daniel Hart waited in the greenhouse.

Claire had not gone to see him again.

Adrian found her in the servants' pantry wearing the same black dress she had worn at dinner.

The white apron was folded on the table.

She was packing two small belongings into a canvas bag.

Adrian leaned against the doorway.

"You are leaving."

Claire did not look up.

"My cover is not particularly convincing anymore."

"You could stay without the cover."

Claire closed the bag.

"Doing what?"

"Helping me fix this."

She finally looked at him.

"That is a very broad job description."

"You seem comfortable with those."

For a moment, the tension between them softened.

Then Adrian placed the final Northstar page on the table.

His initials were still underlined twice.

"Daniel says someone intended me to become Northstar's successor."

Claire read the line again.

"Do you believe him?"

"I do not know what I believe anymore."

"Good."

Adrian frowned.

Claire continued.

"Certainty is what made you easy to manage."

He almost objected, then stopped.

"Evelyn would have liked that sentence."

Claire's expression warmed with grief.

"She used a harsher version."

Adrian looked at the folded apron.

"You miss her."

"Every day."

"I did not listen to her."

Claire held his gaze.

"Then listen now."

She tapped the ledger.

"Do not bury this to save the company name."

"It could destroy Vale Meridian."

"Then build something that deserves to survive."

Adrian looked toward the foyer.

For the first time, the mansion felt less like an inheritance and more like evidence.

"Were you ever actually my housekeeper?"

Claire gave him a tired smile.

"I cleaned your kitchen for eleven months."

"You complained about the coffee grinder."

"It was terrible."

"You reorganized my pantry."

"It was worse than the coffee grinder."

Adrian laughed despite himself.

Claire picked up her bag.

"Those parts were real."

He stepped aside to let her pass, then stopped her with one final question.

"What did Evelyn ask you to do if I chose the truth?"

Claire paused.

"Help you once."

"Only once?"

"She knew you would ask for too much."

Adrian smiled faintly.

Claire walked into the foyer.

Her black flats crossed the same marble where Adrian had first watched her pick up the abandoned rifle.

Nolan stood near the front doors.

"Hart."

Claire looked at him.

He seemed uncomfortable.

"I was wrong about you."

Claire considered that.

"Several times."

Nolan nodded.

"Fair."

Daniel waited outside beneath the stone portico.

Claire saw him and stopped.

Adrian expected her to turn away.

Instead, she walked toward him slowly.

Daniel did not reach for her.

"I do not expect forgiveness," he said.

Claire's eyes remained cool.

"Good."

"I can explain."

"You can try."

They stood facing each other as morning rain faded to mist.

Adrian remained inside, giving them distance.

Then Nolan approached him with a sealed evidence sleeve.

"Sir, we found this beneath the greenhouse case."

Inside was one final photograph.

It showed Charles Vale, Daniel Hart, Lenora Vale, and a fourth person whose face had been carefully cut away.

On the back was a handwritten line.

NORTHSTAR HAD FOUR FOUNDERS.

Adrian stared at it.

"Who was the fourth?"

Nolan shook his head.

Outside, Claire turned as though she had heard the question through the glass.

Daniel saw the photograph in Adrian's hand.

Every trace of relief disappeared from his face.

Claire noticed.

"You know who it is."

Daniel looked from her to Adrian.

"Yes."

Claire's voice dropped.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated for one long second.

Then he said the name.

"Evelyn."

Claire went completely still.

Adrian felt the floor disappear beneath everything he thought he had learned.

Daniel looked toward the awakening city beyond the gates.

"Your sister did not discover Northstar."

His voice was filled with regret.

"She inherited it."

Claire looked back at Vale House, at the broken windows, the bright chandelier, and the folded white apron visible through the pantry door.

Her last shift as Adrian Vale's housekeeper was over.

Her real investigation had just begun.
