Chapter 8 - The Wrong Safe.

The silence after Simon disconnected felt heavier than his voice.

Nolan looked at Charles Vale's note.

"Wrong safe, son."

He shook his head.

"Your father enjoyed drama."

Adrian folded the paper carefully.

"He enjoyed making people work for answers."

Claire studied the empty metal box.

"Then the box itself matters."

Margaret stared at her.

"It is empty."

Claire turned it over.

A thin strip of faded green felt covered the bottom.

She peeled back one corner.

Beneath it was an engraved symbol shaped like a compass star.

Adrian recognized it.

"Northstar."

Claire nodded.

The symbol had four points, and one point was darker than the others.

She pressed it.

A tiny section of the box opened, revealing a narrow paper strip.

On it were two words.

HOUSE ACCOUNT.

Nolan frowned.

"That sounds less exciting than a secret archive."

Margaret looked suddenly uneasy.

Claire noticed.

"You know what it means."

Margaret did not answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Margaret."

She finally looked at him.

"Your mother kept a handwritten household ledger."

Adrian stared.

His mother, Lenora Vale, had died when he was seventeen.

"For groceries?"

Margaret shook her head.

"For everyone who entered the house."

Claire understood first.

"Staff, contractors, drivers, guests."

Margaret nodded.

"Your mother did not trust your father's corporate records, so she kept her own."

Adrian felt the night turning backward through his family history.

"Where is it?"

Margaret looked toward the kitchen corridor.

"The old pantry office."

Claire immediately moved for the door.

Nolan blocked Margaret.

"She stays with me."

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Your choice."

Adrian hated that every choice now felt like a test.

"Bring her."

They crossed the mansion through the servant halls while the main corridors remained unsafe.

Claire knew every corner.

Adrian stopped asking how.

The old pantry office had been converted into linen storage years ago.

Margaret walked to a cabinet and removed three stacks of folded tablecloths.

Behind them was a narrow drawer.

She pulled it open.

Empty.

Margaret froze.

"It was here."

Nolan gave a sharp laugh.

"Of course it was."

Margaret rounded on him.

"I put it here myself after Lenora died."

Claire inspected the drawer.

No dust line.

No torn paper.

No sign of force.

"Someone removed it recently."

Adrian looked at Margaret.

"Who knew?"

"Only me."

Claire studied the room.

Her eyes stopped on an overturned cleaning cart near the door.

It was her cart.

She had left it in the west hall before dinner.

Now it was here.

Claire walked over and opened the lower compartment.

Inside lay a brown leather ledger.

Nolan stared at her.

"That is convenient."

Claire did not touch it.

"Too convenient."

Adrian looked from the ledger to Claire.

"Someone planted it in your cart."

"Yes."

Margaret whispered.

"Simon."

Claire shook her head.

"Simon wants the ledger."

She crouched beside the cart.

"The person who planted it wanted us to think I stole it."

Nolan's expression hardened.

"Or you did steal it and now you are creating a story."

Claire looked up at him.

"Then open it."

Nolan hesitated.

Adrian picked up the ledger instead.

The first pages contained ordinary household entries from twenty years earlier.

Florists.

Drivers.

Repairs.

Temporary staff.

Then Adrian reached the final pages.

The handwriting changed.

One recent entry had been added in dark ink.

CLAIRE HART - ARRIVAL APPROVED.

Beside it was a signature.

Adrian's hand began to shake.

May you like

The signature belonged to his father.

Charles Vale had been dead for five years.
