Chapter 14 - The Chairman at the Door.

Claire stared at Daniel Hart while white headlights swept across the greenhouse glass.

She had imagined her father dead for sixteen years.

Now he stood twenty feet away asking for none of the forgiveness his absence demanded.

"You are alive," she said.

Daniel nodded once.

"I am."

Claire's voice remained steady only through discipline.

"You watched me enter this house."

"Yes."

"You let me believe you were dead."

Pain crossed his face.

"Yes."

Claire looked away before emotion could slow her.

The greenhouse door opened behind them.

Victor Sloane entered with two members of the remaining estate security team.

He wore a dark overcoat over his dinner suit and looked less like an attacker than a chairman arriving late to a meeting.

"Adrian," Victor said.

Relief appeared on his face.

"Thank God."

Adrian almost laughed.

"That line is not going to work tonight."

Victor saw the open archive.

His relief vanished.

Then he saw Daniel.

"You."

Daniel stepped beside Claire.

"Me."

Victor looked around the greenhouse.

"Everyone is misunderstanding the situation."

Nolan gave him a flat stare.

"That is becoming a popular sentence."

Victor ignored him.

"Northstar was compromised years ago."

Adrian held up one ledger.

"By you?"

Victor shook his head.

"By Simon."

Simon actually laughed.

"There it is."

Victor turned on him.

"You sold access to outside clients."

Simon replied calmly.

"After you taught me the rates."

Adrian looked between them.

Claire did not.

She was watching Daniel.

Her father had not taken his eyes off the greenhouse doors.

Claire noticed the detail.

"You expected Victor."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you arrange tonight?"

"No."

"Did you know it would happen?"

Daniel hesitated.

Claire's face hardened.

"That was not a difficult question."

"I knew Victor was planning to retrieve the archive before the independent audit next week."

Adrian turned toward Victor.

"You attacked my house over an audit?"

Victor's expression tightened.

"I came here to prevent Simon from destroying evidence."

Simon rolled his eyes.

"You brought a team through a broken window."

Victor looked at Nolan.

"My people were told to avoid unnecessary harm."

Claire's voice became cold.

"People inside a frightened house do not experience intentions."

Victor looked at her for the first time.

"You must be Claire."

"You already knew that."

The sentence landed.

Adrian looked at Victor.

Victor did not deny it.

Claire stepped toward the greenhouse control panel and pressed one button.

Every internal camera indicator turned green.

Simon stared.

"What did you do?"

Claire looked at him.

"I restored the recording system before we left the library."

Nolan smiled for the first time all night.

Claire continued.

"Everything said in this greenhouse is now stored off-site."

Victor's face changed.

Simon stopped smiling.

Margaret lowered her head in relief.

Adrian finally understood Claire's calm.

She had not been trying to win a confrontation.

She had been trying to make everyone speak while they still believed the house was blind.

Sirens sounded faintly beyond the distant gate.

Victor looked at Adrian.

"You called authorities?"

Adrian shook his head.

Claire answered.

"I did."

Victor looked at Daniel.

"You trained her well."

Daniel's eyes stayed on Claire.

"No."

He gave the smallest smile.

"She became better than I ever was."

Claire did not return the smile.

"Do not make this sentimental."

Then Adrian looked down at the final page of the ledger.

One line had been underlined twice.

NORTHSTAR SUCCESSOR - A.V.

Adrian's face went white.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at him with quiet regret.

"It means this was never only about hiding the past."

May you like

He pointed to Adrian's initials.

"Someone planned to make you the future of it."
