Chapter 12 - The Promise Evelyn Kept.

Adrian did not understand the name at first.
Claire did.
Her father had always been Daniel Hart in every document she knew.
Margaret sat on the edge of the bed as if the truth had become physically heavy.
"Daniel was Charles's half brother."
Adrian stared at her.
"My uncle?"
Margaret nodded.
"Their father never acknowledged him publicly."
Claire looked at the photograph again.
"Why would my father hide that from me?"
"Because the Vale name was dangerous to him long before it meant anything to you."
Simon gave a thin smile.
"And because secrets become habits."
Claire ignored him.
She looked at Margaret.
"Evelyn knew."
"Eventually."
Margaret folded her hands.
"She found the old family records, then found Daniel."
Adrian felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.
"My sister knew I had an uncle and never told me."
Claire shook her head.
"She was trying to verify everything first."
Adrian looked at her.
"You still defend her."
Claire's face softened.
"She defended you when you did not believe her."
That stopped him.
Margaret reached into her pocket and removed a folded envelope.
Claire immediately tensed.
"What is that?"
"Something Evelyn gave me the week before her accident."
Margaret handed it to Claire.
"She told me to keep it unless you came back to Vale House."
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter written in Evelyn's handwriting.
Claire read silently for several seconds.
Adrian watched her eyes move faster as the letter continued.
Then she handed it to him.
Evelyn had written that Claire was not being hired to protect Adrian blindly.
She was being asked to determine whether Adrian had knowingly joined Northstar.
If he had, Claire was supposed to deliver the archive to the independent trustees and walk away.
If he had not, she was supposed to keep him alive long enough to choose what to do with the truth.
Adrian looked at Claire.
"You came here to investigate me."
"Yes."
"For eleven months."
"Yes."
"And every breakfast, every dinner, every conversation in my kitchen was part of that?"
Claire did not hide behind an excuse.
"Partly."
Adrian looked away.
He felt foolish for being hurt by a relationship he had barely acknowledged until tonight.
Yet the betrayal was real because the trust had been real too.
Nolan cleared his throat.
"Sir, we still need the archive."
Adrian ignored him.
"What did you decide?"
Claire looked at him.
"About whether you were involved?"
"Yes."
"I decided you were arrogant, distracted, and too willing to let other people think for you."
Simon laughed once.
Claire continued.
"But I did not find evidence that you knowingly joined Northstar."
Adrian gave her a hard look.
"That is almost comforting."
Claire's mouth moved slightly.
"It was not intended to be."
Margaret stood.
"The final archive is in the greenhouse vault."
Everyone turned to her.
"Why did you wait until now?" Nolan asked.
Margaret looked at Claire.
"Because Evelyn made me promise that Claire would have both keys before I showed her the location."
Simon straightened.
"Margaret."
She looked at him coldly.
"I am finished being afraid of men who mistake access for power."
A loud chime sounded through the mansion.
The front gate system had just opened.
Simon looked at his watch.
"That will be Victor."
Claire looked toward the dark windows.
Adrian tightened his hand around the second key.
"You said Victor was trying to save me from the wrong enemy."
Simon nodded.
"He believes he is."
Claire picked up the rifle again but kept it low.
"Then we finally get to ask him who he thinks the enemy is."
May you like
Margaret stared at the greenhouse doors beyond the garden.
"If we reach the archive first."
