Chapter 9 - A House Full of Eyes.

Adrian read the impossible signature three times.

Claire took the ledger from him and examined the ink.

"This was written recently."

Margaret leaned closer.

"Then it is not Charles."

Nolan looked at Claire.

"Whoever wrote it knew your real name."

Claire nodded.

"And wanted Adrian to see it."

Adrian felt anger rising again.

"Everybody keeps talking about what people wanted me to see."

He pointed toward the ceiling.

"This is my house."

Claire's expression softened slightly.

"That is exactly why it worked."

"What worked?"

"You trusted the familiar things."

The words hurt because they were true.

Margaret had been familiar.

Victor had been familiar.

Simon had been familiar.

Even Nolan's security system had become invisible through routine.

Claire opened the ledger to the page with her name.

A faint indentation appeared beneath the signature.

She held the page sideways under the lantern.

There were more words pressed into the paper from a missing sheet above it.

Nolan found a pencil in the pantry drawer.

Claire lightly shaded the page.

Letters emerged.

EAST MIRROR - 11:40.

Adrian looked at the antique clock on the wall.

11:33.

"Seven minutes."

Claire closed the ledger.

"Someone expects us at the east mirror."

Nolan shook his head.

"Then we do not go."

Claire looked at him.

"If it is a trap, ignoring it does not make the trap disappear."

Margaret spoke quietly.

"There is a mirror in Lenora's dressing room."

Adrian stiffened.

The room had been sealed since his mother's death.

Nobody in the family used it.

Claire seemed unsurprised.

"How many entrances?"

"Two doors and one servant passage."

Nolan looked at Claire.

"You know the passage."

"Yes."

They reached Lenora's dressing room at 11:38.

Dust covered the furniture, but the tall gilt mirror on the east wall was clean.

Too clean.

Claire walked around it without touching the frame.

A small black camera lens was hidden among the carved leaves.

Nolan stared.

"That is not part of my system."

Claire found another lens inside a perfume cabinet.

Then another beneath the vanity.

Adrian felt sick.

"How long?"

Nolan inspected one camera.

"Years, maybe."

Margaret sat down heavily.

"Victor."

Claire looked at the mirror.

"No."

Adrian turned to her.

"You keep saying no."

"Victor benefits from information, but this setup predates Evelyn's investigation."

Claire pointed to an old power cable painted the same color as the wall.

"Someone was watching this house long before Northstar became a problem."

At exactly 11:40, the mirror's surface flickered.

It was not a mirror at all.

A hidden screen came alive behind the reflective glass.

A recorded image appeared.

Charles Vale sat at the same dressing table, older than Adrian remembered him.

The recording had been made shortly before his death.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

"Adrian, if you are seeing this, then I failed to clean up my own mistake."

Adrian stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

"Do not trust Northstar."

Claire moved closer to the screen.

Charles's voice lowered.

"And do not trust the person who tells you Northstar belongs to Victor Sloane."

Everyone in the room went still.

Adrian looked at Claire.

Claire looked genuinely stunned.

May you like

Then Charles Vale said the sentence none of them expected.

"Victor is not the architect."
