Chapter 3 - The Name She Buried.

The hidden room beneath the west wing was no larger than a storage closet.
An old electrical panel covered one wall, while shelves of unused china covered the other.
Claire locked the narrow door and finally set the rifle on a wooden workbench.
Nolan did not relax.
Adrian did not even try.
"Start talking," Adrian said.
Claire removed the white apron from her waist.
She folded it once and placed it beside the weapon.
The ordinary gesture somehow made the moment worse.
"My name is Claire Hart."
Adrian stared at her.
"Bell was fake?"
"Bell was useful."
"Useful for what?"
Claire reached behind an electrical box and pulled out a thin waterproof envelope.
Nolan immediately raised his sidearm again.
"Slowly."
Claire gave him an unimpressed look.
"If I wanted to surprise you, Nolan, you would not get a warning."
She opened the envelope and handed Adrian a photograph.
It showed Evelyn sitting at a small cafe beside Claire.
Evelyn was laughing.
Claire looked younger, with loose hair and a red coat instead of a black uniform.
The date printed on the back was three weeks before Evelyn's accident.
Adrian's throat tightened.
"She never mentioned you."
"She was not supposed to."
Claire took a small flash drive from the envelope.
"Evelyn hired me because she believed someone inside Vale Meridian was using company security to watch her."
Nolan gave a humorless laugh.
"And what were you supposed to be, some private detective?"
"Protective-security consultant."
"That sounds convenient."
"It was inconvenient enough to cost me eleven months of my life."
Adrian looked from the photograph to Claire.
"Why become my maid?"
"Because after Evelyn died, everyone around you was screened by your own security department."
Claire glanced toward Nolan.
"Domestic staff were screened by a separate contractor."
Nolan's jaw tightened.
"You are accusing my department?"
"I am saying Evelyn did."
The room went silent.
Adrian hated how quickly the words found an old wound.
He remembered Evelyn standing in his office with a stack of printed access logs.
He remembered telling her she needed sleep.
He remembered her face when she realized he did not believe her.
"What was she investigating?" he asked.
Claire looked at the flash drive.
"A hidden account called Northstar."
Adrian frowned.
"I have never heard of it."
"That was the point."
"Money?"
"Partly."
Claire's voice became colder.
"Northstar was also used to pay people who never appeared on company records."
Nolan leaned closer.
"What people?"
"Drivers, contractors, consultants, private security."
Nolan looked offended again.
"Names."
"I do not have all of them."
Claire held up the drive.
"Evelyn believed the complete list was stored inside this house."
Adrian stared at her.
"Why would corporate records be here?"
Claire's gaze moved toward the ceiling.
"Because your father did not trust the company servers."
That landed harder than Adrian expected.
Charles Vale had died five years earlier, leaving the business to Adrian and the mansion to the family trust.
He had also left behind locked rooms, unexplained habits, and an obsession with paper records.
"Where is the list?"
Claire shook her head.
"That is what I have been trying to find."
Nolan stepped forward.
"For eleven months?"
"Without making Adrian suspicious."
Adrian almost smiled.
"You failed."
"Tonight was not part of the plan."
A faint electronic tone came from the old panel behind Claire.
She turned immediately.
One tiny indicator light had changed from green to red.
Nolan looked at it.
"What does that mean?"
Claire picked up the rifle again.
"It means someone just opened the east-wing service entrance."
Adrian felt cold.
That entrance required a code changed every morning.
Only three people knew today's code.
Adrian.
Nolan.
And the mansion's longtime house manager, Margaret Davenport.
May you like
Claire looked directly at Nolan.
"Now we find out which one of you gave it away."
