Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Ethan Cole watched his fiancee lift a champagne glass as if she had just won a war no one else knew they were fighting.

Vivienne Sinclair looked flawless in emerald silk, her long dark hair resting over one shoulder, her smile bright enough to fool every guest at the rehearsal dinner.

Only Lily Hart refused to smile.

The nine-year-old sat beside Ethan in a simple white dress, her blonde hair held by the braided headband her mother had made before she died.

Vivienne tapped her spoon against her glass.

"Tomorrow, Ethan and I begin our real family."

Several guests applauded.

Lily's small hand tightened around her napkin.

Ethan leaned toward her.

"You okay, bug?"

Lily nodded too quickly.

Across the table, Vivienne's eyes settled on the child with a warning hidden beneath their warmth.

Ethan had seen that look before, but every time he asked about it, Vivienne called him overprotective.

His sister Caroline had died eighteen months earlier in a crash on Lake Road, leaving Lily with no father, no siblings, and only Ethan to keep the promise he had made beside Caroline's hospital bed.

He had promised Lily would always have a home.

Vivienne raised her glass higher.

"To fresh beginnings."

Lily whispered something Ethan could not hear.

"What did you say?" Vivienne asked.

The room quieted again.

Lily stared at her plate.

"I said my mommy liked beginnings too."

Vivienne's smile hardened.

"Some people don't know when to let the past stay buried."

Ethan set down his fork.

"She's a child, Vivienne."

"And tomorrow is our wedding, Ethan."

Her tone was pleasant, but the message was not.

Lily slipped from her chair and hurried toward the terrace doors.

Ethan started after her, but his mother, Margaret, caught his wrist.

"Do not create a scene tonight."

"She's crying."

"Children cry when attention moves away from them."

Ethan looked at his mother as if she had become a stranger.

Margaret had supported the marriage because Sinclair money would rescue the Cole Conservancy from bankruptcy.

She had repeated that fact so often it sounded less like advice and more like a threat.

Outside, Lily stood beneath the garden arch where tomorrow's vows would be spoken.

She pulled a tiny folded paper from inside her sleeve.

Footsteps sounded behind her.

Vivienne emerged onto the terrace alone.

"Give it to me," she said.

Lily closed her fist.

"It belongs to Uncle Ethan."

Vivienne crouched until their faces were level.

"After tomorrow, your uncle will be my husband."

Her smile disappeared.

"And you will go wherever I decide."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"He promised I could stay."

"Promises change when adults learn the truth."

Vivienne reached for the paper, but Lily stepped backward into the roses.

A thorn caught her dress.

The folded note fell into the grass.

Vivienne bent toward it just as Ethan opened the terrace door.

She immediately stood and restored her radiant smile.

"There you are," she said.

Lily covered the note with one white shoe.

Ethan saw fear on the child's face.

He also saw a streak of ash on Vivienne's fingertips, though no candle near her had burned down.

That night, after everyone left, Lily unfolded the paper beneath her blanket.

The first line was written in Caroline's handwriting.

The second had been added in a stranger's black ink.

If Ethan marries her, the child disappears.

At the bottom, someone had drawn tomorrow's date.
