Chapter 10 - Beneath the Wedding Garden.

The flowered aisle had been built over the estate's nineteenth-century irrigation tunnels.
Margaret claimed the tunnels were sealed when Ethan was a child.
Daniel found new hinges beneath a square of artificial grass.
At two in the morning, they lifted the hidden door.
A ladder descended into darkness.
Ethan entered first with Detective Hayes behind him.
The passage smelled of wet stone and rose fertilizer.
Fresh footprints led toward the north greenhouse, then divided at a rusted valve room.
One trail ended beneath the icehouse.
The other continued beyond the estate wall to an underground loading bay.
They found Lily's white shoe beside a drainage grate.
Hayes crouched over tire marks in the mud.
"They moved her again."
A phone began ringing inside the abandoned loading bay.
Ethan answered.
Grant's voice came through the speaker.
"You have been surprisingly difficult to manage."
"Let Lily go."
"At noon, after the signatures."
"Vivienne is going to sacrifice you the moment this fails."
Grant chuckled.
"Vivienne was eight years old when I began working for the Sinclairs."
"She is not my employer."
The call disconnected.
Hayes replayed the sentence.
Grant served someone higher than Vivienne and Marcus.
At dawn, crews rebuilt the wedding garden under Margaret's supervision.
The plan required Ethan to appear completely defeated.
He recorded a public apology blaming exhaustion and grief for the cancellation.
Every word tasted like a betrayal of Lily.
Within minutes, Vivienne reposted it with a white heart.
Reporters returned to the gates, convinced they were witnessing a romantic reconciliation.
Hayes used their satellite trucks to conceal police communications.
Daniel mapped every tunnel exit while Margaret memorized the sprinkler controls.
No one said what would happen if Grant saw through them.
Ethan knew every smile in the garden might be their last chance to reach Lily alive.
Ethan put on the same white tuxedo jacket.
The fabric still held the crease where Caroline's note had rested.
Vivienne arrived in her lace gown as if the previous day had been erased.
Her long dark hair fell beneath the restored veil.
She smiled for the cameras and told reporters love had survived a family misunderstanding.
Ethan stood beside her beneath the arch.
Daniel wore a microphone beneath his vest.
Detective Hayes posed as a member of the catering staff.
Margaret waited near the piano they had moved onto the terrace.
The ledger was locked inside a police evidence safe, but Vivienne believed Ethan carried it.
"Where is Lily?" he whispered.
"Close enough to hear your vows."
The officiant began.
Under the aisle, Lily woke to the sound of voices filtering through the boards.
Her wrists had been tied, but Grant had left the purple pencil in her pocket after searching for the note.
She worked it beneath the knot until the graphite snapped.
Above her, Vivienne promised devotion.
Lily pulled one hand free.
She crawled toward a shaft of daylight and reached a metal grate directly below the altar.
Ethan heard a faint knock beneath his shoes.
Three short taps.
Two long taps.
The signal Caroline had taught Lily for danger.
Ethan stepped away from Vivienne.
"She is under us."
Grant rose from the final row and drew a pistol from inside his jacket.
"Finish the vows," he ordered.
The cameras kept recording.
May you like
Then Margaret moved beside the piano and pressed a hidden key.
Every sprinkler in the garden erupted at once.
