Chapter 6 - The Man Who Vanished.

Ethan had heard the name Eden Hart only once before.
Caroline spoke it six weeks after Lily was born, then demanded that the family never mention him again.
She said he had chosen money over his daughter.
Lily now crossed the room and removed a loose stitch from her braided headband.
Inside the braid was a strip of paper no wider than a ribbon.
It contained an address and a time.
Old Bell Chapel.
Six tonight.
"Mommy told me to remember it if the blue car came back," Lily said.
Margaret rose so abruptly that her chair overturned.
"You are not going."
Ethan studied his mother.
"You knew Eden was alive."
"I knew he was dangerous."
"Dangerous to Lily, or dangerous to the company?"
Margaret refused to answer.
Detective Hayes arranged two unmarked cars around the abandoned chapel.
At six, Ethan entered alone while Daniel stayed with Lily across the road.
Sunlight leaked through broken stained glass and scattered red shapes over the dusty pews.
A thin man stepped from behind the altar.
He had tired blue eyes, a scar beside his mouth, and a photograph of Lily hanging from a cord around his neck.
"You look like Caroline," Ethan said.
"You look like the man who failed her," Eden replied.
Ethan absorbed the blow.
"Why did you abandon your daughter?"
"I did not abandon anyone."
Eden placed a flash drive on the altar.
He had been an accountant for Sinclair Capital when he discovered money moving through conservation charities into private development funds.
Caroline helped him copy the ledgers.
When Marcus Sinclair threatened Lily, Eden agreed to confess to a lesser fraud and disappear.
"Caroline told everyone I left because it was safer than telling them why."
"Then why did she die?"
"Because Grant learned she kept the original ledger."
Ethan held up the note.
"Did you write the black warning?"
"Yes."
"You frightened a nine-year-old instead of calling me."
"Your phones were monitored, your lawyer owned your contracts, and your mother kept inviting Sinclair into the house."
Eden admitted he had watched Lily from a distance for months.
He knew which bus carried her to school and which bakery sold her favorite lemon cookies.
"Watching is not parenting," Ethan said.
"No," Eden replied.
"It is what a coward does while pretending absence is protection."
His honesty silenced Ethan more effectively than any excuse could have.
Ethan wanted to strike him.
He also knew every accusation was true.
Outside, a horn sounded twice.
Eden's face changed.
"That is not my signal."
The chapel doors burst inward.
Two masked men rushed through the entrance.
Ethan pulled Eden behind a stone column as a gunshot shattered the altar lamp.
Detective Hayes shouted from outside.
One attacker escaped through the cemetery.
The other fell after Daniel tackled him beside the chapel steps.
Lily ran toward Eden before anyone could stop her.
He dropped to his knees.
"You got tall," he whispered.
"You took too long," Lily answered.
Their embrace lasted only seconds.
Police found no identification on the captured attacker.
They did find a security badge for the Cole estate inside his pocket.
The badge belonged to Daniel.
Hayes turned toward Ethan's closest friend.
"Put your hands where I can see them."
May you like
Before Daniel could respond, the flash drive vanished from the altar.
Margaret was the only person standing beside it.
