Chapter 3 - Ten Seconds Before Forever.

The wedding music began at noon.
Ethan stood beneath the flowered arch in his white tuxedo jacket with black lapels, but his thoughts remained upstairs with the unsigned guardianship paper.
He had asked Daniel to find Lily.
He had asked Grant to produce the original document.
Both men had vanished into the house.
The guests rose when Vivienne appeared at the far end of the garden.
Natural sunlight caught her veil, and the lush green hedges framed her like a portrait commissioned to erase every doubt.
Vivienne walked toward Ethan with absolute confidence.
Her smile was radiant.
The musicians swelled into the bridal procession.
Then a small figure stepped from behind the final row of chairs.
Lily was crying silently.
A single tear moved down her cheek.
She held one hand against her chest and kept the other closed around the folded paper.
Ethan left the arch before Vivienne reached it.
A murmur traveled through the crowd.
"Lily?"
She looked up at him with the heartbreak of someone already saying goodbye.
"I tried to be good."
Ethan crouched.
"You are good."
"She said good girls don't make people lose everything."
Ethan glanced toward Vivienne.
Her bright smile had become rigid.
Lily pressed the note into his palm.
"Mommy wrote part of it."
Ethan unfolded the paper.
Caroline's handwriting struck him immediately.
He knew the slant of every letter from birthday cards, grocery lists, and the final note she had written him in the hospital.
Ethan, if anything happens to me, do not let Vivienne Sinclair near Lily.
I found the transfers from the Conservancy, and Grant knows.
The black sentence beneath it was not Caroline's.
If Ethan marries her, the child disappears.
Lily had added one final line in purple pencil.
She said Mommy's accident was supposed to solve everything.
Ethan read the note twice.
The garden noise faded until he could hear only Lily's unsteady breathing.
Vivienne reached them and gave a brittle laugh.
"Sweetheart, this is not the time for one of your stories."
Lily flinched.
Ethan folded the note and placed it inside his jacket.
He stepped toward Lily and rested his hands gently on her arms.
"I am sorry I did not listen sooner."
Vivienne's smile dropped completely.
"Ethan, come back to the altar."
He rose and faced her.
Deep sadness crossed his face, followed by something steadier.
"I'm sorry."
The guests leaned forward.
"But this wedding is canceled."
Vivienne stared at him in absolute shock.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then Margaret rushed from the front row.
"You cannot destroy this family over a child's fantasy."
"Caroline wrote the note."
Grant appeared beside the arch.
"May I see it?"
Ethan stepped back.
"No."
Vivienne's shock gave way to tears so perfect they seemed rehearsed.
"You promised me forever."
"And I promised Lily she would be safe."
Phones rose throughout the garden.
Vivienne turned toward the guests, her voice cracking at precisely the right moment.
"His niece has been ill with grief for months."
Lily buried her face against Ethan's side.
"Please stop filming her," Ethan ordered.
No one lowered a phone.
Daniel finally emerged from the house and hurried forward.
Blood marked the cuff of his shirt.
"The original guardianship document is gone," he whispered.
Ethan's eyes moved to Grant.

The attorney was already walking toward the parking area.
Beyond him, the blue sedan waited with its rear door open.
