Chapter 13 - The Mercy She Refused.
Ethan's grief became something cold and precise.
"Did you call?"
Vivienne looked down at the ravine.
"Marcus took my phone."
"Did you try to stop him?"
"I was afraid."
"Did you leave my sister there?"
Vivienne's silence answered.
Sirens approached along the upper road.
She thrust the locket toward Ethan as if returning it could erase eighteen months.
"Caroline said the accident had been arranged by someone inside your family."
"Who?"
"She only said the king never signs his own orders."
A shot struck the railing between them.
Grant stood uphill among the trees.
Vivienne ran toward Ethan, but Grant fired again and forced them behind the concrete barrier.
"She has said enough," Grant called.
Daniel pulled Eden from the pumping station while Hayes radioed for backup.
Grant moved through the smoke and reached Marcus's abandoned SUV.
He escaped before the roadblock closed.
Marcus did not.
Hayes found him hiding in the river reeds with burns on one sleeve and Caroline's mechanic invoice in his pocket.
Vivienne was arrested for kidnapping, conspiracy, and obstruction.
As officers placed her in a car, she leaned toward Ethan.
"Grant does not serve my father."
"Then who is the king?"
She looked toward the Cole estate on the distant ridge.
"Ask your mother why your father changed his will the night before he died."
Back at the estate, Lily ran into Eden's arms.
Ethan expected jealousy and felt only relief.
They had both failed the child in different ways.
They could also protect her together.
Margaret listened as Ethan repeated Vivienne's accusation.
Her face became older with every word.
"Your father discovered the first transfer," she said.
"I thought he would report me."
"Instead, he changed his will."
Margaret opened a safe hidden behind his portrait.
The will gave control of the Conservancy to Caroline, not Ethan.
Margaret explained that Arthur had managed the family's money since before Ethan was born.
He knew which judges owed favors, which banks feared scandal, and which signatures could be copied without challenge.
When Margaret stole the first funds, Arthur did not condemn her.
He congratulated her for finally understanding power.
She had spent years believing she controlled the arrangement while Arthur quietly acquired every debt around her.
Caroline was the first person to see that the family attorney had become the family's owner.
She had paid for that discovery while everyone else protected his respectable name.
If Caroline died, control passed to Lily when she turned eighteen.
Until then, Lily's legal guardian controlled the voting trust.
Ethan understood the guardianship papers at last.
The marriage was never primarily about his money.
It was about gaining power over Lily.
"Who knew about this will?"
"Grant prepared it," Margaret answered.
Daniel examined the document and found an embossed seal on the final page.
The seal belonged to a private trust company controlled by a man named Arthur Vale.
Grant's father had managed Cole family assets for forty years.
He had died one month before Caroline's crash.
His death certificate listed heart failure.
Detective Hayes searched the state records.
No burial permit had ever been issued.
A security alarm sounded from the west gate.
The camera showed an elderly man walking calmly toward the house.
