Chapter 2 - The Girl in White.

Morning sunlight poured across the Cole estate and turned the garden into a picture of impossible peace.
White roses climbed the trellises.
Musicians tuned their instruments beneath the elm trees.
Guests arrived in polished cars while security guards checked names against a list Vivienne had personally approved.
Lily sat alone in the upstairs nursery, still wearing the simple white dress selected for her role as flower girl.
The folded note rested on her knee.
She had not slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Vivienne standing near Lake Road two nights before Caroline's crash.
No one believed Lily remembered that evening.
Vivienne said grief had created false pictures in the child's mind.
Margaret said discussing the crash would only deepen the wound.
Ethan wanted answers, but the police report described rain, a failed guardrail, and an exhausted driver.
The case had been closed.
A soft knock came at the nursery door.
Vivienne entered wearing her lace wedding gown and flowing veil.
For one breath, she looked exactly like the kind woman Ethan believed he loved.
Then she locked the door.
"Where is the paper?"
Lily clutched her skirt.
"I threw it away."
Vivienne crossed the room and opened the wastebasket.
It was empty.
"Lying is an ugly habit."
"So is hurting people."
Vivienne's face went still.
She gripped Lily's chin, not hard enough to bruise, but firmly enough to terrify her.
"Your mother mistook suspicion for courage."
Lily stopped breathing.
"You knew my mommy."
"Everyone knew Caroline."
"You knew her before Uncle Ethan met you."
Vivienne released her.
The joyful bride returned so quickly it felt like a mask dropping into place.
"Walk down the aisle, scatter your flowers, and keep quiet."
She smoothed Lily's braided headband.
"Then perhaps I will choose a boarding school with horses."
After she left, Lily pulled the note from beneath the insole of her shoe.
The paper was creased and damp from her trembling foot.
She turned it over and studied the faint impression Caroline had left when writing on a sheet above it.
Lily shaded the paper with a pencil.
Three words appeared beneath the warning.
Blue car.
North greenhouse.
Grant.
Downstairs, Ethan adjusted his black bow tie while his best man, Daniel Reyes, watched him in the mirror.
"You look like you're headed to sentencing," Daniel said.
Ethan forced a smile.
"I didn't sleep."
"Because you're nervous, or because Lily begged you not to marry Vivienne last week?"
Ethan turned.
"How did you know about that?"
"Lily called me after you told her she was imagining things."
Shame struck Ethan harder than accusation.
Before he could answer, Margaret entered with family attorney Grant Vale behind her.
Grant carried a leather folder bearing the Cole crest.
"One signature before the ceremony," Grant said.
"What am I signing?"
"A routine guardianship amendment."
Ethan opened the folder.
The document granted Vivienne temporary authority over Lily's education and residence after the marriage.
"I never approved this."
Margaret lowered her voice.
"The bank requires a stable household before releasing the Sinclair investment."
"Lily is not collateral."
Ethan tore the document in half.
Grant's expression barely changed.
"That was only a copy."
Outside the window, a blue sedan rolled slowly beyond the hedge.
May you like
Lily saw it too.
The driver lifted one finger and pointed toward the north greenhouse.
