Chapter 7 - The Custody Trap.
Margaret insisted she had not touched the flash drive.
Detective Hayes searched her coat, purse, and car.
Nothing was found.
Daniel's stolen security badge linked him to the attack, and the blood on his wedding cuff suddenly looked less innocent.
"Someone stole the badge when I was searching Grant's office," he said.
Hayes placed him in a patrol car anyway.
"I believe evidence before friendship."
Ethan watched his best friend disappear behind tinted glass.
Eden stood beside Lily with one protective hand on her shoulder.
The gesture should have comforted Ethan.
Instead, it reminded him that Lily now had a father with a legal claim.
That claim arrived the next morning.
Grant Vale filed an emergency petition accusing Ethan of emotional instability, public violence, and unlawful interference with Lily's surviving parent.
Attached to the petition was Eden's old fraud conviction.
Another attachment showed Ethan smashing his phone after Vivienne's video.
The angle proved the recording had been made from inside the estate library.
"Someone in this house filmed me," Ethan said.
Margaret looked away.
A county caseworker named Paula Wynn came with two deputies.
She spoke gently while explaining that Lily would spend forty-eight hours in temporary care until a judge reviewed the competing claims.
"She is not leaving," Ethan said.
Lily gripped his hand.
"Please do not make this worse," Paula warned.
Eden produced Caroline's private custody letter naming Ethan as Lily's guardian.
Paula examined it and frowned.
"This was revoked six months ago."
She showed them a notarized revocation bearing Caroline's signature.
It was dated a year after Caroline's death.
Even the deputies understood the impossibility.
Paula immediately called her supervisor.
Her face grew tense as she listened.
"I have been ordered to proceed."
Ethan stepped between Lily and the door.
"Ordered by whom?"
"The family court administrator."
Grant appeared at the end of the drive, standing beside a gray government sedan.
He offered Ethan a sympathetic wave.
Lily began to sob.
"Uncle Ethan, I don't want to go."
He knelt and placed Caroline's note inside the pocket of Lily's white dress.
"Keep this with you."
"What if they take it?"
"Then remember every word."
He kissed her forehead and forced himself to release her before the deputies did it for him.
Paula led Lily toward the county vehicle.
Eden whispered that he would follow.
Two officers suddenly approached him from behind.
They arrested him for violating the terms of his release by returning to the county.
Grant had closed both paths at once.
Daniel called from the patrol car and warned Ethan that the attacker had been paid through Vale Family Services.
The same company supplied contractors to the county child welfare office.
Ethan repeated the information to Paula.
Her face sharpened with alarm, but her supervisor again ordered her to move Lily immediately.
The instruction came from an unlisted number, not the official office line.
By the time Paula noticed, another woman had already crossed the drive wearing an identical county badge.
The gray sedan pulled away with Lily in the back seat.
Ethan called Paula ten minutes later to ask where they were taking her.
Paula answered from the estate driveway.
"What do you mean?"
Her voice broke with panic.
"Lily left in a county van with another caseworker."
Ethan stared down the empty road.
