Chapter 9 - The Song Caroline Left.

The grand piano in Margaret's music room had belonged to Caroline.

She had played the same lullaby for Lily every night during the child's first year.

Ethan tore open the bench while Daniel checked beneath the instrument.

They found sheet music, recital programs, and a photograph of Caroline holding newborn Lily.

Nothing resembled a ledger.

Margaret stood in the doorway and watched them destroy the room.

"The song," she said quietly.

Ethan stopped.

"What?"

"Lily shouted piano because Caroline taught her a song about hiding secrets between the keys."

Margaret sat at the keyboard and played the first four notes of the lullaby.

One key refused to descend.

Daniel lifted the ivory cap.

A tiny brass key had been hidden inside.

It opened a locked panel behind the piano's soundboard.

Within the compartment lay a black accounting ledger wrapped in Lily's baby blanket.

Ethan opened it.

Caroline had documented every stolen dollar, every shell company, and every signature.

Vivienne's name appeared beside payments made to a mechanic two days before the Lake Road crash.

Grant's name appeared beside a payment to the deputy who filed the accident report.

Margaret's signature appeared on the earliest transfers.

"You started this," Ethan said.

"I moved money once to cover payroll," Margaret replied.

"Marcus discovered it and turned one crime into a chain around my neck."

"You could have gone to the police."

"And sent two hundred families into unemployment while your sister went to prison for helping Eden steal records?"

Ethan stepped away from her.

"Caroline died because you protected the lie."

Margaret did not defend herself.

Detective Hayes photographed every page.

She warned that the ledger would help, but it would not locate Lily before noon.

Vivienne called at eleven that night.

Her terms were simple.

Ethan would announce that grief had confused Lily and that he had overreacted.

He would marry Vivienne in the same garden at noon.

He would sign control of the Conservancy to Sinclair Capital.

Only then would Lily be released.

"I agree," Ethan said.

Margaret grabbed his arm.

Vivienne laughed softly.

"I knew you would choose the child."

"Let me hear her."

Lily came on the line.

"Do not believe the red flowers," she said quickly.

The call ended.

Daniel traced it to three different towers.

Margaret looked toward the window.

"There will be red flowers at the Sinclair vineyard tomorrow."

Ethan shook his head.

"Lily was telling us someone is listening."

Detective Hayes studied the wedding photograph on Vivienne's public page.

Every flower in the canceled ceremony was white.

Only one arrangement had contained red roses.

It stood beside the estate's old icehouse.

When they opened the icehouse, they found a chair, rope, and Lily's missing tablet.

On the wall, a fresh message had been written in purple pencil.

GRANT TOOK ME UNDER THE AISLE.

Ethan touched the words and found the pencil marks still soft.

Lily had written them after the video, which meant she had escaped the icehouse long enough to leave a trail.

Hayes discovered a child's footprint beneath the red roses and an adult shoe print over it.

The adult sole carried pale clay from the irrigation tunnels.

Margaret remembered Grant asking detailed questions about those tunnels while planning the wedding security routes.

The ceremony had not merely provided cover for the kidnapping.

It had been engineered around it.
