Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Sophia Bennett would remember that strange breakfast for the rest of her life.

It happened in the private dining room of the airport hotel just outside John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Beyond the windows, silver planes climbed into the pale New York morning.

Across from her, Daniel Mercer checked his watch for the fourth time in less than two minutes.

He wore the navy suit Sophia had bought him for their rehearsal dinner.

He looked handsome enough to belong in the photographs from their wedding three days earlier.

He also looked like a man waiting for someone.

Sophia placed her coffee down and watched him glance toward the entrance again.

"Are we expecting somebody?"

Daniel smiled too quickly.

"No one important."

The answer came before Sophia had finished the question.

That was the first thing that bothered her.

The second was the way his phone lay face down beside his plate.

Daniel never placed his phone face down.

He lived through that screen.

He answered emails during dinner, checked market alerts during movies, and once reviewed a contract while Sophia was crying after her father's funeral.

Now the phone might as well have been radioactive.

The dining room door opened.

A young blonde woman entered wearing a white dress beneath a pale blue coat.

Large sunglasses rested on top of her head even though she was indoors.

A silver suitcase rolled behind her.

Daniel stood so fast that his chair scraped the floor.

"Kelly."

Sophia looked from him to the woman.

Kelly Hayes worked in business development at Daniel's consulting firm.

Sophia had met her twice.

Both times Kelly had been polite in the careful way people were polite when they knew more than they should.

Kelly smiled and slid into the empty chair beside Daniel instead of the one across from him.

"Sorry I'm late."

Sophia's fingers tightened around the handle of her coffee cup.

"Late for what?"

Daniel cleared his throat.

"Kelly has to fly out today too."

Sophia stared at him.

"On our flight?"

Kelly reached for a piece of toast without asking.

"Same destination."

Sophia felt something cold move through her chest.

Their honeymoon was supposed to be ten quiet days in California before Daniel returned to work.

He had complained for weeks that he needed distance from the office.

Now one of his closest employees was sitting beside him with a suitcase.

"Why?"

Daniel finally met Sophia's eyes.

"There is a client situation in Los Angeles."

Sophia let the silence stretch.

"During our honeymoon?"

Kelly gave a small laugh.

"It's just work."

The words were casual.

The glance she gave Daniel was not.

Sophia saw it.

Daniel saw that she saw it.

His jaw tightened.

"Can we not do this here?"

Sophia leaned back.

Three days earlier, this man had promised in front of two hundred people that there would never be secrets between them.

Now there was a woman sitting beside him before sunrise, eating from their table as if she belonged there.

Daniel reached for Sophia's hand.

She moved it before he could touch her.

His smile vanished for half a second.

Then his phone vibrated.

Daniel looked at the screen and immediately turned it over again.

Kelly's own phone vibrated one second later.

Sophia noticed that too.

Daniel stood and grabbed the handle of his suitcase.

"We should head to the terminal."

Kelly rose beside him.

Sophia remained seated.

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Sophia."

She finally stood.

Something inside her whispered that she should go home.

Something louder told her to follow them.

She picked up her handbag and walked toward the door.

As she passed Daniel's abandoned coffee cup, she saw a faint lipstick mark on the rim.

It was not hers.
