Chapter 9 - The Policy.

Sophia could not take her eyes off the life insurance policy.

Fifty million dollars.

Daniel had purchased it the day after their wedding.

Rachel read the page twice.

"This may not even be valid if the marriage is invalid."

Sophia barely heard her.

"Why would he need it before a honeymoon?"

No one answered.

Daniel did.

"Because married couples buy insurance."

Sophia looked at him.

His wrists were not cuffed.

He was not under arrest.

The officers were still determining what authority they had over documents tied to an alleged financial crime.

That legal normality felt obscene.

"We were married for one day."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"We had been together for years."

"While you were married to her."

Sophia pointed toward Kelly.

Kelly turned away.

Daniel looked at the officer.

"I want a lawyer."

Rachel nodded.

"That is wise."

He glared at her.

Sophia focused on the policy.

The application included medical details she had never provided.

Her height.

Her weight.

Her physician's name.

Even a medication she had taken briefly after her father's death.

Someone had accessed her private records.

"How did he get this approved?"

Rachel examined the signature page.

"Electronic signature."

Sophia saw her own name.

Again, the signature looked real.

Again, she had never signed it.

Kelly sat down abruptly in an airport chair.

"I didn't know about that."

Sophia turned toward her.

"You knew about the money."

Kelly's eyes filled with shame and anger.

"I knew he was moving money."

"My money."

"He said it was compensation he was owed."

Sophia almost laughed.

"Twenty-five million at a time?"

Kelly looked at Daniel.

"He said your father cheated him out of equity."

Sophia felt another thread pull loose.

Her father had disliked Daniel from the beginning.

He called Daniel charming without using the word as a compliment.

Six months before his death, he removed Daniel from an advisory role in the family company.

Daniel had claimed he did not care.

Maybe he had cared very much.

Rachel's paralegal called from the office with another discovery.

Daniel had taken out a second policy through a different insurer.

Twenty million dollars.

Sophia's hands went numb.

"When?"

Rachel listened.

"Three months ago."

Before the wedding.

Sophia looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

The airport officer requested that everyone move to a private interview room.

Daniel refused to answer questions without counsel.

Kelly agreed to cooperate.

Sophia sat beside Rachel at a small metal table.

On the other side of the wall, Daniel was making calls.

Sophia could hear his voice through the door.

He sounded calm again.

That frightened her.

Kelly sat across from Sophia with her hands folded tightly.

"I sent the message because I found the insurance papers last night."

Sophia stared at her.

"Last night?"

Kelly nodded.

"He left his laptop open in the hotel suite."

"Why were you in his hotel suite?"

Kelly's face twisted.

"Because he's my husband."

The answer hurt even though Sophia already knew it.

Kelly continued.

"I thought he married you for access to the company."

Sophia's eyes sharpened.

"You thought?"

Kelly swallowed.

"I knew the wedding was happening."

Rachel leaned forward.

"And you did nothing?"

Kelly looked at the floor.

"Daniel said it was a ceremonial arrangement."

Sophia laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"He told you I knew?"

Kelly nodded.

Sophia felt rage push through the shock.

Kelly had walked into the airport believing Sophia had willingly participated in a fake marriage.

That explained the confidence.

The entitlement.

The way she sat beside Daniel at breakfast.

May you like

Then Kelly said the sentence that changed everything again.

"He told me you would never make it to California."
