Chapter 11 - The Cup on the Table.

Sophia was taken to an airport medical room while the officers secured her handbag.
A paramedic checked her blood pressure and asked what she had eaten.
She answered mechanically.
Eggs.
Toast.
Coffee.
Two sips of coffee.
The coffee mattered.
Sophia knew it before anyone said so.
Daniel had insisted on pouring it himself.
At breakfast, she had thought the bitterness came from the hotel blend.
Now every ordinary detail looked sharpened by suspicion.
Rachel contacted the hotel immediately.
The dining room still had not cleared the breakfast table because the private room had been reserved until noon.
Security was asked to preserve the cup, carafe, and camera footage.
Sophia sat on the edge of the medical bed and stared at the wall.
Kelly waited outside under supervision.
Daniel remained in a separate room with his lawyer on the way.
The situation had finally moved beyond a marital argument.
The officers were now speaking to local law enforcement.
Rachel entered after twenty minutes.
"The hotel is preserving everything."
Sophia looked up.
"Camera footage?"
"Yes."
"Can we see it?"
"Not yet."
Sophia hated the word yet.
She had spent the morning learning how much damage could live inside small delays.
The paramedic said Sophia showed no severe symptoms but recommended a full hospital evaluation because the unknown capsules and possible drink contamination raised obvious concerns.
Sophia refused to leave until she knew whether Daniel was being allowed to board.
Rachel sat beside her.
"He isn't going anywhere right now."
"Right now."
"Sophia."
"Those words keep changing."
Rachel did not argue.
Her phone rang.
She answered, listened, and walked toward the corner.
Sophia watched her face.
The color left it slowly.
Rachel ended the call.
"The hotel reviewed the camera footage."
Sophia stood.
"What did they see?"
Rachel took one careful breath.
"Daniel poured your coffee."
Sophia nodded.
That part was expected.
Rachel continued.
"Then he turned away from the table."
"And?"
"Kelly approached the coffee service."
Sophia looked toward the door.
Kelly sat outside with her head bowed.
"Kelly touched my cup?"
Rachel's voice was quiet.
"The footage appears to show her dropping something into it."
Sophia felt the room tilt.
For an hour, Kelly had transformed from mistress to frightened accomplice to potential witness.
Now the story twisted again.
Sophia walked to the door before Rachel could stop her.
"Kelly."
Kelly looked up.
Sophia's expression made her stand immediately.
"What?"
"What did you put in my coffee?"
Kelly's face went blank.
"Nothing."
"There's video."
Kelly stepped backward.
"No."
Sophia's voice rose for the first time all day.
"There is video of you touching my cup."
Kelly looked toward the officers.
Then at Rachel.
Then back to Sophia.
"I can explain."
Sophia laughed without humor.
"Of course you can."
Kelly's hands shook.
"Daniel gave me a packet."
Sophia stared at her.
"What packet?"
"Powder."
Rachel stepped between them slightly.
"Kelly, do not say anything you are not prepared to repeat formally."
Kelly nodded through tears.
"He told me it was an anti-nausea supplement."
Sophia's anger became ice.
"Why would I need an anti-nausea supplement I didn't ask for?"
Kelly closed her eyes.
"Because he said you panic on flights."
Sophia had never panicked on a flight in her life.
Kelly kept talking.
"I put it in your coffee."
Her voice cracked.
"Then I saw the insurance policy last night."
Sophia stared at her.
"So you poisoned my drink before you decided to warn me?"
Kelly shook her head desperately.
"I didn't know what it was."
Rachel's phone buzzed.
She read the new message from the hotel and froze.
"They found the packet in the dining room trash."
Sophia looked at her.
"Do they know what's in it?"
Rachel's eyes lifted.
"Not yet."
A uniformed officer approached from the corridor.
"Ms. Bennett, we need you to come with us."
Sophia's heart dropped.
"Why?"
May you like
The officer looked toward the private room holding Daniel.
"Because your husband just accused Kelly of trying to kill you."
