Chapter 6 - The First Marriage.

Rachel's team moved with the speed of people who understood that every minute could become evidence or loss.
One attorney contacted the bank's fraud department.
Another searched the Nevada marriage registry.
The paralegal pulled Daniel's travel records through documents Sophia already had lawful access to from their joint planning files.
Sophia stood by the window and watched Manhattan shimmer under the morning sun.
She felt like she was watching somebody else's life collapse.
Rachel finally called her away from the glass.
"The marriage certificate is real."
Sophia looked at her.
"You're sure?"
"The license number matches the county record."
"Maybe they divorced."
Rachel's face answered before her voice did.
"No divorce has been recorded in Nevada."
Sophia sat down.
For several seconds, she heard only the low hum of the air conditioner.
Daniel had stood in a church three days earlier and married Sophia while legally married to Kelly.
The ceremony, the vows, the rings, the photographs, and the speeches all twisted into something grotesque.
"So my marriage isn't valid."
Rachel chose her words carefully.
"If the Nevada marriage was valid and never dissolved, Daniel could not legally marry you."
Sophia looked at her wedding ring.
She pulled it off.
A pale line remained around her finger.
"He knew."
"Almost certainly."
Sophia placed the ring on the conference table.
The metal made a tiny sound against the wood.
It sounded louder than it should have.
The forensic accountant entered holding a printout.
"We found Pacific Meridian."
Sophia looked up.
"Who owns it?"
"A trust registered in Delaware."
"Beneficiary?"
He hesitated.
"Kelly Hayes."
The room went still.
Sophia almost admired the cruelty of the structure.
Daniel had used Sophia's forged authority to move nearly twenty-five million dollars into a company ultimately benefiting his legal wife.
The honeymoon was cover.
The business trip was cover.
Maybe the entire relationship had been cover.
Sophia's phone buzzed again.
This time the unknown sender sent a short video.
The clip had been recorded inside an airport lounge.
Daniel stood near a window with his back to the camera.
Kelly faced him.
Their voices were faint but clear.
"Once it clears, we're done with her."
Kelly's voice trembled.
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"She'll never know until we're gone."
Sophia stopped the video.
Rachel watched her carefully.
"You don't have to listen again."
Sophia replayed it.
This time she focused on Kelly.
Kelly did not look triumphant.
She looked afraid.
"Something is wrong."
Rachel frowned.
"Besides the obvious?"
Sophia paused the frame.
Daniel's hand was around Kelly's wrist.
His grip looked tight.
"Kelly isn't relaxed."
Rachel leaned toward the screen.
"She could be nervous about committing fraud."
Sophia replayed the last second.
Kelly pulled her arm away.
Daniel immediately stepped closer to her.
Sophia remembered every casual touch at breakfast.
Every glance.
Every strange smile.
Maybe she had mistaken pressure for intimacy.
Or maybe Kelly was simply a frightened accomplice.
Rachel's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her expression hardened.
"The bank says Daniel submitted a second transfer request."
Sophia stood.
"How much?"
"Another twenty-four point nine million."
"Stop it."
"They're trying."
Sophia's phone lit up with Daniel's name.
This time she answered.
"Where are you?"
His voice was no longer warm.
Sophia glanced at Rachel.
"Almost there."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Come directly to Gate 42."
"Why?"
A beat of silence passed.
"Because Kelly isn't feeling well either."
In the background, Sophia heard a woman say something.
Then the line went dead.
Sophia stared at her phone.
The unknown sender sent one final message.
May you like
Gate 42.
Please hurry.
