Chapter 7 - Gate 42.

Sophia had no intention of walking blindly into Gate 42.
Rachel agreed.
They called airport security and reported suspected financial fraud, identity misuse, and possession of forged legal documents.
The response was careful rather than dramatic.
No one promised an arrest.
No one promised Daniel would be stopped before boarding.
Evidence still had to be verified.
Sophia hated how reasonable the law sounded when her life was moving at emergency speed.
Rachel insisted on accompanying her back to JFK.
A fraud investigator from the bank joined them by video call during the drive.
"The first transfer is frozen."
Sophia closed her eyes briefly.
"And the second?"
"Pending review."
"Can Daniel cancel the review and redirect it?"
"Not from the account as currently restricted."
Rachel looked at Sophia.
"That buys us time."
Sophia stared out at the traffic.
"Time is what he keeps trying to steal."
At the terminal entrance, two airport security officers met them.
Sophia showed the messages and the Nevada marriage record.
One officer asked whether Daniel had threatened her.
"Not directly."
Sophia thought of the passport photograph he had sent.
"He wants me to come to him."
The officer nodded.
"Then we stay nearby."
Sophia passed through security using another identity document after the airline confirmed the situation and Daniel's possession of her passport.
Every step toward Gate 42 tightened the knot in her stomach.
She saw Kelly first.
Kelly stood near a charging station with her silver suitcase beside her.
Her sunglasses were gone.
Her face looked pale.
Daniel stood several feet away on the phone.
The black leather folder rested under his arm.
Sophia stopped behind a column.
Rachel remained beside the officers farther back.
Kelly's eyes moved across the crowd.
They landed on Sophia.
For the smallest second, relief crossed her face.
Then fear replaced it.
Kelly looked immediately at Daniel.
Daniel was still talking.
Kelly reached into her handbag.
Sophia's phone vibrated.
A message arrived from the unknown number.
He thinks I'm sending you nothing.
Sophia looked at Kelly.
Kelly did not move her lips.
Sophia typed one word.
You?
Kelly's phone buzzed in her hand.
She read it.
Then she looked at Sophia and gave the slightest nod.
Sophia felt her anger rearrange itself.
Kelly had sent the evidence.
The legal wife had exposed the husband they shared.
Daniel ended his call.
Kelly immediately put her phone away.
He walked toward her.
"Did she answer?"
Kelly shook her head.
"No."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"She should have been here twenty minutes ago."
He took out Sophia's passport and looked at it.
Kelly glanced toward the column.
Sophia stepped into view.
Daniel froze.
His surprise lasted less than a second.
Then his face changed into concern.
"There you are."
Sophia walked toward him slowly.
"Here I am."
Daniel held out her passport.
"You scared me."
"Did I?"
His eyes flicked toward the officers behind her.
He noticed them.
His expression barely changed.
That scared Sophia more than panic would have.
"What's going on?"
Sophia looked at Kelly.
Kelly stared at the floor.
Daniel moved closer.
"Sophia."
She looked at the black folder under his arm.
"What's in there?"
Daniel's hand tightened around it.
"Work papers."
"For Los Angeles?"
A muscle moved in his cheek.
"Yes."
Sophia pointed toward the departure screen.
The flight at Gate 42 was bound for Nassau.
"Then why are you flying to the Bahamas?"
Daniel said nothing.
Kelly stepped backward.
Daniel turned toward her.
"Don't."
The single word was quiet.
Kelly stopped moving.
Sophia finally understood the fear in the video.
Kelly had helped build the trap.
Now she was afraid Daniel would close it around her too.
One of the officers approached.
"Sir, we'd like to ask you a few questions about the documents in that folder."
Daniel looked at Sophia.
Then he smiled.
"Of course."
He handed the folder to the officer without resistance.
Sophia almost felt relief.
May you like
Then the officer opened it.
The folder was empty.
