Chapter 8 - The Empty Folder.

The empty folder changed the mood at Gate 42 instantly.
Daniel spread his hands with offended calm.
"I told you this was a misunderstanding."
The officer checked the folder again.
There was nothing inside except a blank legal pad.
Sophia looked at Kelly.
Kelly's face had drained of color.
"Where are the papers?"
Daniel turned toward Sophia.
"What papers?"
His voice was gentle now.
It was the voice he used when he wanted other people to think she was emotional.
Sophia had heard him use it on contractors, assistants, and once on her mother.
"The transfer documents."
Daniel gave a soft laugh.
"Sophia, you need to slow down."
Rachel stepped forward.
"Mr. Mercer, I am counsel for Ms. Bennett."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Rachel."
"The bank has flagged two attempted transfers from Bennett-controlled entities."
Daniel looked genuinely surprised.
That reaction was either brilliant acting or new information.
"I have authority over those accounts."
Rachel held up a copy of the challenged power of attorney.
"Authority obtained through a document Ms. Bennett denies signing."
Daniel's gaze shifted to Sophia.
"You signed it."
Sophia's voice remained steady.
"Not that version."
For the first time, anger showed openly on his face.
Kelly whispered something behind him.
"Daniel."
He spun toward her.
"Not now."
The force in his voice made even the officer look up.
Kelly flinched.
Sophia saw it.
The bank investigator called Rachel.
Rachel listened, then muted the phone.
"The second transfer has been blocked."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
Sophia felt a tiny piece of control return.
"Both?"
Rachel nodded.
"Both."
Daniel looked at Sophia as if she had struck him.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?"
"Protected my money."
"You just destroyed a deal that took me a year to build."
Sophia stared at him.
"A deal that pays your wife?"
The words landed in public air.
Two nearby passengers looked over.
Daniel went completely still.
Kelly closed her eyes.
Sophia removed her wedding ring from her pocket and held it up.
"You forgot to mention that part."
Daniel's face changed.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Calculation.
"Who sent you the certificate?"
Sophia looked at Kelly.
Daniel followed her gaze.
Kelly stepped back again.
"You stupid—"
The officer moved between them immediately.
"Sir."
Daniel stopped.
Kelly's hands began to shake.
Sophia suddenly understood why the black folder was empty.
"You moved the papers."
Kelly looked at her.
"I tried."
Daniel laughed once.
"This is unbelievable."
Kelly ignored him.
"He made me carry the folder through security because he thought you'd search him if anything happened."
Sophia's stomach tightened.
"Where are they now?"
Kelly looked toward her silver suitcase.
Daniel moved first.
He lunged for the suitcase handle.
The officer caught his arm.
Passengers gasped and backed away.
Kelly stumbled.
Sophia grabbed the suitcase before it rolled.
Daniel's composure vanished.
"Don't open that."
Sophia stared at him.
It was the first honest thing he had said all morning.
Rachel crouched beside the suitcase.
"Kelly, is it yours?"
Kelly nodded.
"Yes."
"Do you consent to opening it?"
Kelly looked directly at Daniel.
Then she looked at Sophia.
"Yes."
The officer asked Kelly to open it herself.
Her fingers shook as she entered the combination.
The zipper released.
Kelly lifted the lid.
Clothes filled the top layer.
She pushed them aside.
A second black folder appeared underneath.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rachel opened the folder carefully.
Inside were notarized transfer instructions, corporate formation papers, and photocopies of Sophia's identification.
Then Rachel found something else.
A life insurance policy.
Sophia's name appeared under Insured.
Daniel's name appeared under Beneficiary.

The policy amount was fifty million dollars.
The effective date was yesterday.
