Chapter 5 - Freeze Everything.

Rachel's office occupied the thirty-second floor of a glass tower in Midtown Manhattan.
By the time Sophia arrived, three attorneys, a forensic accountant, and Rachel's senior paralegal were waiting in the conference room.
No one offered coffee.
No one wasted time.
Rachel projected the power of attorney onto the wall.
Sophia's signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked perfect.
"That's mine."
Rachel turned toward her.
"Did you sign this document?"
Sophia read the first page.
Her mouth went dry.
"No."
The notary stamp belonged to the man who had visited their apartment.
The date was the night before the wedding rehearsal.
Sophia remembered signing beneficiary forms at the kitchen island while Daniel poured champagne.
Rachel placed another document beside it.
"This version was uploaded to the bank six hours later."
Sophia leaned closer.
The pages were nearly identical.
One clause was different.
The altered version gave Daniel unilateral authority to approve transfers below twenty-five million dollars.
Sophia stared at the number.
"He forged the page after I signed the packet."
The forensic accountant nodded.
"That is our working theory."
Sophia's phone rang again.
Daniel had called nine times.
Kelly had called once.
That single call disturbed Sophia more than the nine from her husband.
Rachel pointed to a screen showing account activity.
"A transfer request was initiated at 8:42 this morning."
Sophia looked at the amount.
Twenty-four million, nine hundred thousand dollars.
Exactly below the limit.
"Destination?"
"A corporate account in California."
"Whose company?"
The accountant enlarged the record.
Pacific Meridian Holdings.
Sophia had never heard the name.
Rachel's paralegal spoke from the end of the table.
"The company was formed seven months ago."
"Owner?"
"Hidden through a registered agent."
Sophia turned toward Rachel.
"Can we stop it?"
"The bank has placed it under review because of our fraud notice."
"Under review is not stopped."
Rachel met her eyes.
"I know."
Sophia looked back at the forged document.
Daniel had not improvised this morning.
He had planned it for months.
The wedding was not merely a lie.
It might have been part of the mechanism.
Sophia's phone buzzed.
Daniel had sent a photograph.
It showed her passport in his hand.
Below it, he wrote one sentence.
You forgot something important.
Rachel read the message over Sophia's shoulder.
"Do not respond."
Sophia's jaw tightened.
"He thinks I need the passport more than he needs me to remain calm."
"He may be right if he believes you're still trying to catch the flight."
Sophia looked at the departure time.
Boarding would begin in forty-three minutes.
"Let him believe it."
She typed slowly.
I'm on my way back.
Daniel replied immediately.
Good.
Then another message arrived from the unknown number.
The sender attached a photograph of a black leather folder resting inside an airport lounge.
Sophia recognized Daniel's initials embossed on the corner.
She had given him that folder when he made partner.
The sender wrote beneath the photo.
The real transfer papers are in his carry-on.
Rachel read the message.
"Whoever this is knows too much."
Sophia's thoughts returned to Kelly.
"Maybe because they're standing next to him."
Rachel shook her head.
"If Kelly sent the marriage certificate, why is she helping him leave?"
"Maybe she isn't helping him."
Sophia studied the photograph.
A boarding pass lay half-visible beneath the folder.
Only one passenger name could be seen.
KELLY HAYES.
The destination was not Los Angeles.
It was Nassau.
Sophia felt her pulse slow in the worst possible way.
"They changed flights."
Rachel reached for the phone.
"Then this isn't a honeymoon betrayal anymore."
Sophia looked at the transfer amount again.
"No."
May you like
She stood.
"It's an escape plan."
