Chapter 14 - The Woman Behind Pacific Meridian.
Kelly did not deny the payments.
When confronted the next morning, she sat across from Sophia and Rachel in a secured conference room and asked for water.
Her hands no longer shook.
That change bothered Sophia.
"Pacific Meridian is mine."
Kelly spoke plainly.
"I created it."
Sophia's anger returned immediately.
"For Daniel."
"At first."
Rachel slid the bank records across the table.
"You deposited nearly six hundred thousand dollars of your own money into this company."
Kelly nodded.
"I was building an exit fund."
Sophia stared at her.
"From your husband?"
"From Daniel."
Kelly looked at the records.
"He controlled our joint accounts."
She explained that Daniel had used her credit, salary, and inherited savings to rescue his failed investments.
When she threatened divorce, he reminded her that she had helped him conceal transactions from creditors.
He made sure leaving him would look like confessing to financial crimes.
Pacific Meridian became her escape route.
She used bonuses and side consulting income to fund it quietly.
Then Daniel discovered the company.
Instead of exposing it, he decided to use it.
"He said if the money landed there, it would look like I stole it."
Sophia felt the final shape of the plan becoming visible.
Daniel would use forged authority to transfer Sophia's money into Kelly's secret company.
Kelly would become the obvious suspect.
Sophia would be sedated during travel.
Daniel would hold the passports and documents.
If anything went wrong, he could blame Kelly for fraud and poisoning.
If everything worked, he could redirect the money later and disappear.
"You were his exit and his scapegoat."
Kelly nodded.
Tears gathered in her eyes but did not fall.
"I realized it last night."
Sophia remembered the anonymous message.
"So you warned me."
"Yes."
"After helping him for years."
Kelly flinched.
"Yes."
Sophia did not forgive her.
She also no longer needed to hate her in order to understand her.
Rachel asked about the powder.
Kelly described the small packet Daniel had given her at breakfast.
She admitted putting it into Sophia's coffee.
She admitted she should have refused.
She admitted fear was not innocence.
That answer mattered.
Sophia had heard Daniel deny everything.
Kelly, at least, had started naming her own guilt.
The detective entered with another update.
The hotel camera footage showed Daniel removing the packet from his pocket before handing it to Kelly.
A hallway camera also showed him placing the unlabeled capsule bottle into Sophia's handbag earlier that morning.
Sophia closed her eyes.
The proof was finally moving toward the truth.
Daniel's attorney had advised him to stop making statements.
He was released temporarily pending further investigation but his passport had been surrendered under legal process connected to the financial case.
The attempted transfers remained frozen.
Sophia's corporate declaration under Covenant Blue revoked every authority linked to Daniel.
For the first time, he had no direct access to her money.
Sophia expected relief.
Instead, Rachel received a call from building security at Sophia's Manhattan apartment.
Daniel was there.
"He can't be."
Sophia stood.
Rachel put the call on speaker.
The security manager sounded nervous.
"Mr. Mercer entered using his resident credential before we received the updated restriction."
Sophia's pulse surged.
"Is he still inside?"
"We believe so."
Sophia thought of her father's files.
The original family trust certificates.
The home safe.
The wedding documents.
Then she remembered something worse.
Her father's second USB drive was still in the apartment safe because she had not known it existed until the bank inventory mentioned two devices.
Daniel might know about it.
Sophia grabbed her coat.
Rachel caught her arm.
"You're not going there alone."
Sophia looked at Kelly.
Kelly stood too.
"I know what he's looking for."
Sophia's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Kelly swallowed.
"A ledger."
"What ledger?"

"The one that proves your father's death wasn't the first time Daniel tried to make someone disappear."
