Chapter 13 - The Dead Man's Warning.
The letter from Sophia's father reopened a wound she had spent eighteen months learning to survive.
Edward Bennett had been difficult, proud, and fiercely protective of the company he built.
He had also been right about Daniel.
Sophia sat in Rachel's office that evening while the airport investigation continued.
She had completed a hospital evaluation and been released.
The preliminary bloodwork showed no dangerous level of sedative in her system.
She had taken too little coffee.
That accident of taste might have saved her from whatever Daniel planned next.
Rachel placed the private investigation report on the table.
"Your father hired this firm two years ago."
Sophia turned the pages slowly.
Daniel's hidden debts.
A failed investment fund.
Two lawsuits settled confidentially.
His Vegas marriage to Kelly.
A pattern of companies opened and dissolved.
Sophia looked up.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Rachel's eyes filled with regret.
"I don't know."
Sophia did.
Her father had been sick by then.
He had spent his final months trying to keep Sophia from feeling that his death would destroy her life.
Maybe he planned to tell her when he had more evidence.
Maybe Daniel intercepted the report first.
The detective had found the original inside Daniel's luggage.
Daniel must have taken it from Edward's office after the funeral or from somewhere else Sophia had not yet discovered.
Rachel turned to the last page.
There was a handwritten instruction from Edward.
If Daniel approaches Sophia after my death, activate Covenant Blue.
Sophia frowned.
"What is Covenant Blue?"
Rachel shook her head.
"I've never heard of it."
They searched Edward's estate files.
Nothing appeared.
Then Sophia remembered an old safe-deposit inventory from the bank her father used before moving most assets into trusts.
One sealed envelope had been marked BLUE.
The bank confirmed the box still existed under Sophia's control.
Two hours later, Sophia and Rachel sat in a private vault room with the envelope between them.
Sophia broke the seal.
Inside was a single notarized document and a USB drive.
The document was a conditional voting agreement.
If any spouse, partner, or agent of Sophia attempted unauthorized control of Bennett assets, all delegated authority would automatically terminate upon written declaration from Sophia.
Her father's lawyers had built a trap inside the corporate structure.
Daniel's forged power of attorney could never reach the core company shares.
Sophia almost laughed.
For the first time that day, relief felt real.
Rachel inserted the USB into an isolated computer supplied by the bank.
A video file appeared.
Edward Bennett filled the screen.
He looked thinner than Sophia remembered.
His voice was weak but steady.
"Sophia, if you are watching this, then I failed to tell you something before I ran out of time."
Sophia covered her mouth.
Rachel looked away to give her privacy.
Edward explained that Daniel had approached him two years earlier seeking a partnership.
When Edward refused, Daniel threatened to expose private company information he had learned while consulting.
Edward investigated him.
He discovered Kelly.
He also discovered Daniel's debt.
Then Edward said something Sophia did not expect.
"Kelly came to me first."
Sophia leaned toward the screen.
Edward continued.
"She told me Daniel planned to court you if I cut him out."
Sophia felt the room go cold.
Kelly had known about Daniel's plan before Edward died.
She had warned Edward.
Yet months later she allowed Daniel to pursue Sophia anyway.
Edward's image paused briefly as he coughed.
"Do not assume Kelly is innocent."
Sophia looked at Rachel.
The video resumed.
"But do not assume she is free either."
Edward's final instruction was simple.
"Follow the money, not the story they tell you."
The file ended.
Sophia immediately asked the forensic accountant to trace every payment into Pacific Meridian.
An hour later he called.
The company had received more than Daniel's attempted transfers.
For eleven months, someone had been quietly depositing money into it.
