Chapter 10 - The Letter Evelyn Hid.

Naomi read the words again because she could not accept them the first time.

Use Rose file.

Her mother, Rose Reed, had worked for the Whitmore family years before Naomi ever entered the mansion.

Rose had died when Naomi was twenty-four, and Evelyn had rarely spoken about the final months of her employment.

Daniel looked at Naomi.

"Why would Claire have a file about your mother?"

Naomi's throat tightened.

"I don't know."

Evelyn looked down at her hands.

That was enough.

Naomi understood immediately.

"You know."

Evelyn asked Grant and Daniel to sit.

Then she told a story she had kept quiet for more than a decade.

Rose had not simply been a housekeeper.

During the final year of Daniel's father's life, she had discovered irregular payments hidden inside household renovation invoices.

The money had been moving through shell vendors tied to a junior company officer.

That officer was Adrian's father, Charles Whitmore.

Rose brought the invoices to Evelyn.

Evelyn confronted Charles privately.

He repaid the money and resigned from the company before the matter became public.

Daniel's father chose not to pursue the matter further because Charles was his brother.

Naomi stared at Evelyn.

"My mother knew all of that?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because I asked her not to involve you."

Naomi stood and walked toward the window.

For twelve years, she had believed her mother left the Whitmore estate because of illness.

That was only partly true.

Rose had also left because Charles blamed her for his downfall and had begun spreading rumors that she was dishonest.

Evelyn had offered money and legal help.

Rose refused both.

"She wanted a clean life away from this family," Evelyn said.

Naomi turned.

"Then why did you hire me?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.

"Because you applied under your own name, and I recognized it."

Naomi felt anger, gratitude, and betrayal collide inside her.

"You never told me."

"I was afraid you would leave."

Naomi almost laughed at the honesty.

Daniel looked at the schedule again.

"What is the Rose file?"

Grant answered.

"If Charles kept records, Adrian may have them."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"And if Claire found them, she could twist the story."

Daniel understood.

A file could be made to suggest Rose had been responsible for the missing money instead of the person who discovered it.

Naomi suddenly remembered Claire's repeated comments about staff loyalty and theft.

They had never been random insults.

Claire had been building a narrative around Naomi just as she had built one around Evelyn's memory.

Grant called Mara again.

She confirmed she had once seen Adrian carrying an old storage box labeled R. Reed.

Claire photographed documents from the box several months earlier.

Daniel stood.

"Where is Adrian now?"

No one knew.

The vehicle tracking company found Claire's phone signal near a private storage facility on the edge of town.

Grant contacted the facility manager and learned Adrian had rented a unit there for three years.

The manager refused access without proper authorization, which Grant respected.

But he confirmed that Adrian and Claire had entered the facility that afternoon.

Daniel looked at Naomi.

"They're going for the Rose file."

Naomi's first instinct was to leave immediately.

Grant stopped her.

"No confrontation."

Naomi nodded.

She did not want a confrontation.

She wanted the truth preserved.

Grant contacted the appropriate authorities and provided the documentation Mara had supplied, along with information about Daniel's vehicle and the suspected forged papers.

The storage unit would be handled properly.

For the first time, Daniel seemed to appreciate the difference between discovering truth and trying to control the outcome himself.

That evening, Evelyn asked Naomi to sit with her in the bedroom.

The white pillow was gone.

Naomi had ordered every decorative pillow removed because she could not look at them without remembering the previous night.

Evelyn reached beneath her mattress and pulled out a sealed envelope.

"I should have given you this years ago."

Naomi recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The letter was addressed to Evelyn, not Naomi.

Rose had written it shortly before leaving the estate.

She thanked Evelyn for protecting Naomi from the conflict.

She also wrote one sentence that made Naomi's eyes burn.

If anything ever happens to me, don't let my daughter believe silence means shame.

Naomi lowered the page.

Evelyn whispered, "I failed at that."

Naomi could not answer yet.

Then she noticed a second page behind the letter.

It was a photocopy of an old bank ledger.

One name was circled in red ink.

Charles Whitmore.

Beneath it was a second name Naomi had never seen before.

A. Beaumont.

Claire's last name was Beaumont.

Naomi looked up slowly.

"Who is A. Beaumont?"

May you like

Evelyn's face became pale.

"Claire's father."
