Chapter 12 - Claire's Last Performance.

The connecting door had not been used in years.

It linked Evelyn's bedroom to a small dressing room that opened onto the east corridor.

A wardrobe stood in front of it, making the passage easy to forget.

Naomi and Henry moved the wardrobe carefully.

The brass handle behind it was polished clean.

Someone had used it recently.

Daniel stared at the narrow doorway.

"The hallway camera wouldn't see this."

Naomi opened the door.

The dressing room beyond was empty except for an old mirror and several garment racks.

A side door led directly to the corridor near the bridal suite.

Claire had not needed Adrian to pass the hallway camera.

He could enter through the east corridor, move through the dressing room, and reach Evelyn's room unseen.

Grant arranged for the area to be documented.

A partial shoe mark on the dusty floor matched the style of dress shoes Adrian often wore, though Grant warned it was not proof by itself.

Daniel asked Claire to return to the mansion with legal counsel if she wanted to explain her role.

Claire surprised everyone by agreeing.

She arrived at four o'clock wearing a plain navy dress, her blonde hair pulled into a simple ponytail, and no visible jewelry.

For the first time since Naomi had met her, Claire looked younger than her carefully constructed image.

An attorney accompanied her.

Adrian did not.

They met in the formal sitting room.

Evelyn chose to attend.

Naomi stood behind her chair.

Daniel remained across the room rather than beside Claire.

Claire noticed the distance immediately.

Her eyes filled.

Then she stopped herself from crying.

"You think every tear is a trick now."

Daniel answered quietly.

"I think tears aren't evidence."

Naomi recognized her own warning inside his sentence.

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"I believed you destroyed my father."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Your father helped Charles move money."

Claire's attorney raised a hand.

"My client is not here to discuss unverified historical allegations."

Grant placed copies of the old ledger on the table.

"Then we can discuss the current documents."

Claire admitted that Adrian recruited her after learning she and Daniel attended the same fundraising events.

Adrian showed her the Rose file and claimed Evelyn had covered up Rose's theft by blaming their fathers.

He convinced Claire that marrying Daniel would give her access to documents proving the truth.

Over time, the plan changed.

Adrian wanted corporate control.

Claire wanted revenge.

She told herself Daniel would eventually understand.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

"When did you realize the Rose file was false?"

Claire looked at Naomi.

"I didn't."

Naomi held her gaze.

"You saw my mother's signature."

Claire looked away.

"Adrian said injuries explained the differences."

Grant asked about the call button.

Claire repeated that Adrian disconnected it.

"He said Evelyn would keep summoning Naomi and ruin the conversation."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Conversation?"

Claire swallowed.

"The amendment."

She said Adrian entered through the connecting room, disconnected the button, and left before Claire approached Evelyn with the papers.

Evelyn refused to sign and threatened to call Grant.

Claire panicked.

She took the pillow from the hallway chair because she wanted to move it to the bed and block Evelyn from reaching toward the call cord.

The explanation sounded strange even to Claire as she said it.

Evelyn looked at her.

"You held it where I could not see past it."

Claire's face crumpled.

"I know."

"You kept telling me to stop calling Naomi."

"I know."

"And when I became frightened, you told me Daniel would believe you first."

Claire began to cry.

This time, no one moved to comfort her.

She looked at Daniel.

"I was angry."

Daniel's expression remained steady.

"You were prepared."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Naomi reached into a folder.

She removed a printed still from the hallway camera showing Claire carrying the pillow before entering the room.

Then she placed the red contract beside it.

Finally, Grant placed the group messages on the table.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Anger doesn't schedule a board vote three days in advance."

Claire had no answer.

Her attorney asked for a private break.

They left the room for ten minutes.

When Claire returned, the emotional performance was gone.

She looked tired, frightened, and finally honest.

"Adrian told me if I backed out, he'd release the Rose file publicly and say Naomi's mother stole from the Whitmores."

Naomi understood the final layer.

Claire had become both participant and target.

That did not erase what she had done.

But it explained why she had kept going after doubt began.

Grant asked where Adrian was.

Claire looked toward the window.

"He thinks the wedding is still tomorrow."

Daniel frowned.

"Why would he think that?"

Claire met his eyes.

"Because I told him you still believe me."

May you like

Her voice became steady.

"If you want the rest of the evidence, let him keep believing it."
