Chapter 5 - The Bracelet Under the Pillow.

Naomi moved toward Evelyn before anyone else reacted.
She knew the room well enough to cross it in darkness without striking the furniture.
Daniel switched on his phone flashlight.
Grant did the same.
The bed was empty on one side, Evelyn still lay safely on the other, and the bedroom door stood open again.
Claire was gone.
"Stay with Mom," Daniel told Naomi.
He ran into the hallway with Grant behind him.
Naomi kept one hand on Evelyn's shoulder and listened.
Footsteps moved downstairs.
A door opened.
Then the backup generator started with a low mechanical hum.
Lights flickered back to life.
Evelyn looked toward the doorway.
"She's afraid of the notebook."
Naomi picked it up from the floor where Daniel had dropped it during the blackout.
"Then we need to know why."
They opened to the first marked page.
Evelyn had written brief notes in careful block letters.
June 18 - Claire asked who controls voting shares after marriage.
June 24 - Adrian visited without appointment.
July 2 - Claire asked whether Daniel inherits house automatically.
July 7 - oxygen line moved after dinner.
July 11 - Grant's letter missing from mail tray.
July 19 - Claire said I forgot conversation that never happened.
Naomi felt anger rise behind her ribs.
She had witnessed several of those events without seeing how they connected.
On the next page, Evelyn had taped a small white card.
The card contained a handwritten phone number and one word.
Mara.
Naomi recognized the name.
Mara Ellis had worked as Claire's personal assistant before the engagement.
She had disappeared from Claire's social circle abruptly three months earlier.
Daniel returned five minutes later with an expression Naomi had never seen on him.
"Claire left again."
Grant entered behind him.
"The breaker was switched manually from the service hall."
Daniel looked at the notebook in Naomi's hands.
She gave it to him.
He read every line.
When he reached the note about July 19, he stopped.
"She told me Mom had accused her of taking a necklace that day."
Evelyn shook her head.
"I never accused her of taking anything."
Daniel looked sick.
"Claire told me you did."
Naomi remembered what happened after that supposed accusation.
Daniel had apologized to Claire for his mother's behavior and arranged a weekend trip for them both.
Evelyn had stayed home alone except for staff.
Claire had created conflict and received Daniel's sympathy as a reward.
The pattern was becoming clearer.
Grant asked to copy every page of the notebook.
Naomi carried it downstairs to the library printer while Daniel remained with Evelyn.
Halfway down the stairs, she noticed a flash of white beneath the console table.
It was one pearl from Claire's broken bracelet.
Another pearl lay near the service hallway.
Another rested beside the breaker room door.
Naomi followed them like a trail.
At the end of the service hall, she found a small gold clasp.
The bracelet had not broken downstairs before Claire entered Evelyn's room.
It had broken while Claire was moving through the house after leaving the bedroom.
Naomi crouched and noticed something else beneath the breaker panel.
A cream scrap of paper had been pushed behind the baseboard.
She pulled it free.
It was the bottom corner of the missing transfer document.
The paper had torn through part of a signature line.
There was blue ink above it.
Naomi brought the scrap to Grant.
He examined it carefully.
"This may be enough to match the original if we find the rest."
Daniel returned to the library.
"Claire's phone is off."
Naomi showed him the pearls.
"Her bracelet didn't break downstairs before the incident."
Daniel stared at the small objects in her palm.
"She said it did."
"Yes."
His eyes moved toward the ceiling, as if he could see through it to his mother's room.
"How many times did I believe her because she cried first?"
Naomi did not answer.
There was no useful answer.
Grant looked at the card with Mara's phone number.
"Call her."
Daniel dialed from the library phone.
A woman answered after four rings.
Daniel introduced himself.
There was a long silence.
Then Mara spoke in a frightened voice.
"I wondered when someone from that house would finally call me."
Daniel gripped the receiver.
"What do you know about Claire and Adrian?"
Another pause followed.
"Enough to tell you not to marry her on Saturday."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Why?"
Mara's voice dropped.
"Because your engagement wasn't Claire's idea."
Everyone in the library went still.
"What does that mean?"
May you like
Mara exhaled slowly.
"It means Adrian picked you for her."
