Chapter 2 - The Tears That Came Too Fast.

Dr. Samuel Harris arrived twenty minutes later and asked everyone except Naomi to leave the bedroom while he examined Evelyn.

Claire objected immediately.

"I'm family."

Dr. Harris gave her a calm look.

"You're her son's fiancée, and right now my patient asked for Naomi."

Claire's mouth tightened before she forced a wounded smile.

Daniel saw it, but he was too overwhelmed to understand why the expression bothered him.

He followed Claire into the upstairs sitting room, where she began repeating the same story with small changes.

First she said Evelyn had been sitting upright when she entered.

Then she said Evelyn had been sleeping.

First she said she had moved the pillow to help.

Then she said she had never touched it.

Daniel noticed the contradictions but told himself they were the result of panic.

Inside the bedroom, Dr. Harris checked Evelyn's oxygen level and listened carefully while she described what she remembered.

Naomi stood near the door with the broken pearl bracelet hidden in her apron pocket.

"She wanted me to sign something," Evelyn whispered.

Dr. Harris stopped writing.

"Who did?"

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

"Claire."

Naomi felt a chill that had nothing to do with the rain outside.

"What kind of document?"

Evelyn swallowed carefully.

"She said Daniel needed my signature before the wedding."

Naomi knew Daniel would never pressure his mother into signing financial papers without his attorney present.

Evelyn knew it too.

"Did you sign it?"

"No."

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

"I told her I wanted Grant to read it first."

Grant Lowell was the Whitmore family's attorney, a patient man in his sixties who insisted that no major document be signed in a bedroom, at a dinner table, or during an emotional family event.

Naomi had heard him say those words more than once.

Dr. Harris asked Evelyn to rest and told Naomi that the older woman's condition was stable but that stress needed to be minimized.

When he left, Daniel was waiting in the hall.

"Can I see her?"

Naomi stepped aside.

Claire tried to follow.

Evelyn's voice came from the bed before Naomi could say anything.

"Daniel only."

Claire froze.

Daniel hesitated and then entered alone.

Naomi closed the door behind him.

She turned and found Claire standing less than two feet away.

The soft, frightened expression was gone.

"You enjoy this, don't you?"

Naomi did not move.

"Enjoy what?"

"Being needed."

Claire lowered her voice.

"You have spent years making her depend on you."

Naomi had heard versions of that accusation before from people who disliked household staff knowing more about a family than guests did.

She refused to react.

Claire glanced at Naomi's apron pocket.

"What did you pick up from the floor?"

Naomi's heartbeat quickened, but her face remained calm.

"Why do you ask?"

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Because I saw you take something."

"Then you already know what it was."

For the first time, Claire looked genuinely uncertain.

The bedroom door opened.

Daniel stepped out with a pale face.

"She says you brought her paperwork."

Claire looked stunned for exactly half a second.

Then she laughed softly in disbelief.

"Daniel, your mother asked me to bring her the wedding guest list."

"She said it was a transfer document."

Claire's eyes filled again.

"She is confused."

Daniel looked toward the closed door.

"She didn't sound confused."

Claire stepped closer and placed her hands on his chest.

"You know how much pressure she's been under."

Naomi watched Daniel's expression harden, not against Claire, but against the impossible choice she was placing in front of him.

Believe the woman he loved, or believe the mother who had raised him alone after his father's death.

Claire understood that choice better than anyone.

She had been preparing him for it for months.

Naomi reached into her pocket.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Claire turned.

Naomi opened her hand and revealed the broken pearl bracelet.

Daniel stared at it.

"Isn't that yours?"

Claire looked down at her bare wrist.

Her face drained of color, but her answer came quickly.

"It broke earlier."

"Where?"

"Downstairs."

Naomi held his gaze.

"I found it under your mother's bed."

The silence that followed felt heavier than the storm outside.

Claire took one step back.

"Then your maid put it there."

Naomi almost smiled at the speed of the accusation.

Daniel did not.

He looked at Claire as if seeing a stranger through familiar features.

"Why would Naomi do that?"

Claire's voice rose.

"Because she hates me."

Naomi's attention shifted past them to the small writing desk at the end of the hallway.

A cream envelope was lying half-hidden beneath a stack of engagement invitations.

She recognized the embossed seal on it.

Whitmore Family Trust.

Naomi walked over and pulled the envelope free.

It had already been opened.

Inside was a photocopy of a document bearing Evelyn's name.

At the bottom was a signature that looked almost right.

Almost.

Naomi handed it to Daniel.

He stared at the signature for several seconds.

May you like

Then he whispered the sentence Claire clearly did not want him to say.

"My mother didn't sign this."
