Chapter 9 - The Engagement Contract.

Evelyn did not deny Sophie's claim.
She asked Naomi to close the library door.
Daniel stood beside the fireplace looking stunned.
"You unplugged your own call button?"
Evelyn folded her hands over the top of her cane.
"Not last night."
Grant leaned forward.
"Explain."
Evelyn said she had asked Sophie to unplug the system briefly two days earlier because she wanted to test whether anyone would notice.
She had begun to suspect that Claire or Adrian was interfering with household systems.
Sophie unplugged it at noon.
Naomi discovered the failure during her two o'clock check and reported it immediately.
Henry reconnected it and documented the repair.
Evelyn's test had confirmed the staff was paying attention.
"Last night, someone unplugged it again."
Naomi checked the maintenance note.
The cable had been secure after Henry's repair.
Sophie confirmed she never touched it again.
Daniel exhaled.
"Why all these tests instead of coming to me?"
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
"Because I needed to know whether you could hear a fact after Claire gave you a feeling."
The words hurt him, but he did not argue.
Grant redirected the conversation.
"Sophie, what did Claire ask you to put in Evelyn's room?"
Sophie's answer came quietly.
"Letters."
"What kind?"
"Copies of financial papers."
"Anything else?"
"A bracelet once."
Naomi looked at Daniel.
Claire had accused Evelyn of stealing jewelry in July.
The incident that helped convince Daniel his mother was becoming confused had been staged.
Sophie's voice cracked.
"Claire told me Evelyn needed to look unreliable."
Daniel turned away from the phone.
Grant asked one final question.
"What was supposed to happen after the wedding?"
Sophie began to cry again.
"I don't know everything."
"Tell us what you do know."
"There was a contract."
Daniel looked back.
"What contract?"
Sophie said Claire kept it in a red leather folder.
It was not a wedding contract or a prenuptial agreement.
It was an agreement between Claire and Adrian.
If Daniel married Claire and gained expanded authority over the trust, Claire would encourage Daniel to approve a restructuring proposal Adrian had been trying to pass for years.
In return, Adrian would transfer a large consulting fee to Claire after the restructuring.
Grant's expression became grim.
"Where is the contract?"
"Claire had it last night."
Naomi remembered the cream folder but not a red one.
Sophie said the red folder had been hidden inside a garment box delivered for Claire's gown.
Naomi knew exactly where those boxes were stored.
The bridal dressing room had been prepared in the east guest suite.
Daniel, Grant, and Naomi went there together.
The room looked untouched.
Three gown bags hung from a brass rack.
Shoe boxes were stacked beneath a vanity.
A large white garment box sat on the window seat.
Naomi opened it.
Inside was gold tissue paper and nothing else.
Daniel checked the closet.
Grant checked the drawers.
No red folder.
Then Naomi noticed the dress mannequin in the corner.
The engagement gown had been pinned around it for alterations.
The hem looked heavier on one side.
Naomi lifted the fabric carefully.
A narrow pocket had been sewn into the lining.
Inside was a red leather folder.
Daniel opened it.
The first page carried Claire's name.
The second carried Adrian's.
The document did exactly what Sophie described.
It did not guarantee success, but it revealed motive clearly enough to end any remaining doubt about the relationship between Claire and Adrian.
Daniel sat on the edge of the window seat.
"She was going to marry me for leverage."
Grant corrected him gently.
"That appears to have been part of the plan."
Daniel laughed once without humor.
"Part?"
Grant turned to another page.
"There is a schedule attached."
Naomi looked over his shoulder.
The schedule listed dates for engagement events, trust meetings, and company votes.
Beside Friday's engagement dinner were three words.
Evelyn signs amendment.
Beside Saturday's wedding were four more.
Daniel assumes temporary authority.
And beside Monday's board meeting was the final line.
Adrian proposal approved.
The entire weekend had been mapped like a business transaction.
Daniel stared at the page until his face hardened.
"Cancel the wedding."
Grant nodded.
"I'll handle the formal notices."
Naomi expected relief.
Instead, Evelyn looked worried.
"Not yet."
Daniel turned.
"Mom?"
"Claire still has something she thinks can control you."
Daniel remembered the message.
You still don't know the worst part.
Evelyn pointed to the bottom of the schedule.
There, beneath the board meeting, was one final handwritten note.
If Daniel resists, use Rose file.
May you like
Naomi stopped breathing.
Rose was her mother's name.
