Chapter 6 - The Call Button.

Mara refused to explain everything over the phone.
She said she had kept documents because she was afraid no one would believe her without proof.
Daniel asked where she was.
Mara named a coffee shop thirty minutes from the mansion and agreed to meet Grant there the following morning.
Before hanging up, she added one warning.
"Do not tell Adrian you're speaking with me."
Grant wrote down the location.
Daniel stared at the receiver after the call ended.
The man who had spent years defending his cousin now looked as though he could no longer remember why.
Naomi returned upstairs to check on Evelyn.
The elderly woman was awake and calmer, but she kept glancing at the bedside wall.
"My call button."
Naomi followed her gaze.
The emergency call button hung beside the bed on a cream cord.
Naomi pressed it.
Nothing happened.
She pressed again.
Still nothing.
The button normally rang a bell in the staff pantry and sent an alert to Naomi's phone.
Naomi lifted the wall plate gently.
The cable behind it had been unplugged.
She did not touch anything else.
Instead, she photographed the connection and called Grant upstairs.
Daniel arrived moments later.
When he saw the unplugged cable, he sat down in the nearest chair.
"How long has it been like that?"
Naomi checked the service log on her phone.
The system had passed inspection four days earlier.
Evelyn looked at her son.
"I pressed it tonight."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Before Naomi came in?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Twice."
Naomi felt a cold pressure in her chest.
If she had not heard the sound from the hallway, no one might have entered for several more minutes.
Daniel walked to the window and stared into the rain.
"I asked Claire to stay with you tonight."
Evelyn did not respond.
The guilt in his voice already said enough.
Naomi reconnected the call button only after Grant documented the position.
A bell rang immediately downstairs.
The system had never failed.
Someone had disconnected it.
The next morning, Grant met Mara while Daniel stayed at the mansion with Evelyn.
Naomi supervised breakfast and tried to restore a normal routine, but the house no longer felt normal.
Every closed door seemed suspicious.
Every unfamiliar car on the circular drive made Daniel look toward the window.
At ten-thirty, Adrian arrived without calling.
He entered the breakfast room smiling as if he had come to discuss wedding flowers.
"I heard Aunt Evelyn had a rough night."
Daniel put down his coffee.
"Who told you?"
Adrian's smile barely changed.
"Claire."
"When?"
"This morning."
Daniel leaned back.
"Her phone is off."
For the first time, Adrian hesitated.
"She called from another number."
Naomi was standing near the sideboard and saw Daniel notice the hesitation.
Adrian asked if the engagement dinner was still happening Friday.
Daniel said he had not decided.
Adrian laughed lightly.
"Don't let one stressful night ruin your future."
Evelyn's voice came from the doorway.
"Whose future?"
Everyone turned.
Naomi had helped her downstairs because Evelyn insisted she would not hide in her bedroom.
Adrian's expression became instantly warm.
"Aunt Evelyn, you should be resting."
"You should be answering my question."
Daniel moved a chair for his mother.
Evelyn sat and looked directly at Adrian.
"Why did you prepare an amendment that gave away control of my shares?"
Adrian stopped smiling.
"I didn't."
Daniel placed the copied pages Grant had photographed on the table.
"Grant says the language matches a proposal you brought him six weeks ago."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Similar language doesn't make it mine."
Naomi noticed his eyes move briefly toward the hallway.
Someone was standing there.
Claire.
She had returned without anyone hearing the front door.
She wore a simple cream coat and no makeup.
For once, she was not crying.
"Daniel, we need to talk alone."
He remained beside his mother.
"You can talk here."
Claire glanced at Adrian.
It lasted less than a second.
But Evelyn saw it.
Naomi saw it.
And Daniel finally saw it too.
Claire walked into the room slowly.
"Fine."
She set her handbag on the table.
"Then I'll tell everyone the truth."
Adrian's face changed.
"Claire."
She ignored him.
Daniel stood.
"I'm listening."
Claire looked directly at him.
"Your mother asked me to help her change the trust."
Evelyn laughed once in disbelief.
Claire continued.
"She wanted Adrian removed from the company, and she wanted you to take control before the wedding."
Daniel looked at his mother.
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
Claire reached into her handbag.
Naomi tensed.
Claire pulled out a folded letter.
"Then explain this."
She placed it in front of Daniel.
It was addressed to Adrian.
It appeared to be in Evelyn's handwriting.
At the bottom was Evelyn's signature.
Daniel read it silently.
Then his face went pale.
The letter accused Adrian of financial misconduct and instructed Claire to prepare papers transferring control to Daniel immediately.
For several seconds, the entire case against Claire seemed to collapse.
Then Naomi noticed something no one else had.
The letter was dated July 31.
May you like
On July 31, Evelyn's right hand had been in a cast.
And the signature was written with the right-handed slant Evelyn could not have produced that day.
