Chapter 13 - The Door Naomi Left Open.

Grant did not like Claire's proposal.
Neither did Naomi.
Daniel liked it even less.
But no one suggested a reckless confrontation.
Instead, Grant coordinated with company security and the appropriate professionals to preserve evidence and protect Evelyn while allowing Adrian to believe the engagement dinner would proceed in a limited form.
The mansion would not host a wedding.
There would be no guests.
There would be no celebration.
But the formal dining room lights would remain on Friday evening, and Daniel would send Adrian one carefully worded message.
Need final papers before tomorrow.
Adrian responded within two minutes.
I'll bring everything.
Naomi watched Daniel place the phone on the table.
"He thinks I'm still willing to sign?"
Daniel nodded.
"He thinks I still care more about avoiding embarrassment than asking questions."
Evelyn gave him a faint smile.
"That used to be a reasonable assumption."
Daniel almost smiled back.
At seven-thirty, Adrian arrived carrying a black leather case.
He wore a dark suit and the relaxed expression of a man who believed he had survived a crisis.
Claire was not visible.
She waited in the library with her attorney and Grant.
Evelyn remained upstairs with Dr. Harris nearby.
Naomi stood in the hallway outside the dining room.
Daniel met Adrian alone at the table.
A small recorder was present with proper notice through the legal arrangement Grant had established.
The goal was not to trick Adrian into a dramatic confession.
The goal was to see what documents he brought and what he expected Daniel to do with them.
Adrian opened the case.
Inside were revised trust papers, a corporate voting form, and a statement claiming Evelyn had voluntarily authorized Daniel to act immediately.
Daniel looked at the signature.
"Mom signed this?"
Adrian did not hesitate.
"This afternoon."
Daniel knew Evelyn had been asleep under Dr. Harris's supervision at the claimed time.
"Where?"
"Upstairs."
Daniel leaned back.
"You saw her?"
"Yes."
Naomi felt the final piece click into place.
Adrian was not merely relying on Claire's story.
He was willing to invent his own.
Daniel asked him to explain the connecting door.
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"What connecting door?"
"The one behind my mother's wardrobe."
Silence.
Daniel continued.
"Claire says you used it last night."
Adrian laughed.
"Claire is unstable."
Naomi had heard the tactic before.
When Claire became inconvenient, Adrian used the same label Claire had used against Evelyn.
Confused.
Emotional.
Unreliable.
Daniel looked at the papers again.
"You built this entire plan around making people distrust the person telling the truth."
Adrian closed the case.
"I came here to help you."
"No."
Daniel's voice was calm.
"You came here because you thought I was still easy to steer."
Adrian stood.
"We're done."
He reached for the case.
Daniel placed one hand on it.
"Leave the documents."
Adrian's face hardened.
"They belong to me."
Grant entered from the library.
"Actually, several appear to contain disputed signatures related to the Whitmore trust."
Adrian looked toward the door.
Claire stepped into the hallway behind Grant.
The color drained from Adrian's face.
"You."
Claire did not answer.
Adrian's composure cracked.
"You told me he believed you."
Claire looked at Daniel.
"He finally stopped believing whoever spoke first."
Naomi saw Adrian's eyes move toward the east corridor.
He was looking for the same escape route he had used before.
Naomi had anticipated it.
Earlier that afternoon, she had opened the old connecting door, moved the wardrobe, and left the dressing-room door wide open.
There was no hidden route anymore.
Only a brightly lit corridor with security staff at the far end.
Adrian stopped when he saw them.
No one touched him.
No one needed to.
Grant asked him to remain while the disputed documents were addressed through proper channels.
Adrian turned back toward Claire.
"You think they're going to protect you?"
Claire flinched.
Naomi watched her carefully.
For months, Claire had controlled rooms by producing the strongest emotion.
Now she looked small and uncertain because no one was reacting on cue.
Daniel took the black case and placed it on the table.
Inside one side pocket, Naomi noticed a thick envelope.
Grant opened it with Daniel's permission.
The envelope contained photocopies from the Rose file.
On top was a typed press statement accusing Rose Reed of financial misconduct.
It had already been formatted for public release.
Naomi read the first line.
She felt no fear.
The signature evidence and original ledgers would answer it.
Then Grant turned to the final page.
At the bottom was a scheduled distribution time.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m.
Adrian had planned to release the accusation the morning of the wedding if Daniel resisted.
Daniel looked at Naomi.
"That's what the note meant."
Use Rose file.
Naomi nodded.
Adrian had not simply threatened a dead woman's reputation.
He had counted on Naomi becoming so consumed by defending her mother that Evelyn would be left without her strongest ally.
But the file was now on the table.
May you like
The hidden door was open.
And for the first time, Adrian had nowhere to put his version of events before the evidence arrived.
