Chapter 7 - The Camera That Wasn't Broken.

Naomi asked Daniel for the letter without explaining why.
Claire looked annoyed.
"Why does she need to see it?"
Daniel handed it over anyway.
Naomi placed the paper beside a handwritten note Evelyn had made that morning.
The difference was obvious once someone knew where to look.
Evelyn's normal signature leaned gently to the right.
During the weeks her right hand had been immobilized, she had signed with her left hand, producing letters that were smaller and uneven.
The July 31 letter contained the smooth right-handed signature.
Daniel looked at Claire.
"Mom couldn't write like this that day."
Claire stared at the page.
"Maybe the date is wrong."
Adrian interrupted.
"This is getting ridiculous."
Evelyn turned to him.
"I agree."
Her voice was calm.
"So sit down."
Adrian actually obeyed.
Naomi realized the balance in the room had shifted.
Claire could no longer rely on tears alone, and Adrian could no longer pretend he had walked into an ordinary family disagreement.
Grant returned just before noon with a slim folder from Mara.
He asked Daniel, Evelyn, and Naomi to join him in the library.
Claire demanded to be included.
Grant refused.
Adrian said he was leaving.
Daniel asked the security staff to keep the front gate closed until Grant finished speaking.
No one was being restrained, but Daniel made it clear that anyone who left would not be welcome back without legal counsel.
Adrian sat down again.
Inside the library, Grant opened Mara's folder.
It contained email printouts, calendar screenshots, and two invoices from a private document-preparation service.
One invoice had been paid by a company owned by Adrian.
The other had been paid using Claire's former business account.
The dates matched entries in Evelyn's notebook.
Daniel read the emails with growing disbelief.
Most were cautious and vague, but several referred to "the marriage window" and "temporary authority."
One message from Adrian to Claire said, Keep him focused on the wedding, and I'll handle Evelyn.
Another from Claire replied, She trusts the maid more than anyone, so Naomi is the real obstacle.
Daniel stopped reading.
"They were planning around us."
Grant nodded.
"That's what it appears to show."
Naomi felt no satisfaction.
She thought only of Evelyn pressing the call button and hearing nothing.
Mara had also provided a memory card.
It came from a small camera Claire once used in her apartment.
Mara said Claire had asked her to test it before bringing it to the Whitmore mansion months earlier.
Grant inserted the card into the laptop.
The first files were ordinary videos of flowers, outfits, and event tables.
Then came a short recording made accidentally in Claire's apartment.
The camera appeared to have been left running on a shelf.
Claire and Adrian were speaking in the background.
Their faces were not visible, but their voices were clear.
"Daniel won't sign anything without his mother."
That was Claire.
Adrian replied, "Then stop trying to convince Daniel."
There was the sound of a glass placed on a table.
"Convince Evelyn."
Claire laughed softly.
"She can't stand me."
Adrian's answer came immediately.
"She doesn't have to like you."
"She just has to feel alone."
Daniel closed the laptop.
The silence that followed felt like grief.
Grant rested one hand on the folder.
"There is more."
Daniel shook his head.
"I need a minute."
He walked to the library window.
Naomi understood that he was not simply learning Claire had lied.
He was learning that many of his own choices had helped those lies succeed.
He had canceled lunches with his mother because Claire said Evelyn needed rest.
He had ignored Naomi's concerns because Claire called them jealousy.
He had allowed Adrian greater access to the company because Adrian said Evelyn was too cautious.
The truth did not arrive as one dramatic revelation.
It arrived as dozens of small memories changing meaning all at once.
Grant opened the laptop again.
"The hallway camera may give us the clearest answer about last night."
Naomi brought the old flash drive from Evelyn's nightstand.
Grant repaired the corrupted file using a backup copy Henry had saved automatically to the security office.
The video opened.
It showed the upstairs hallway outside Evelyn's bedroom at 8:41 p.m.
Claire entered carrying a cream folder.
At 8:46, she stepped out, looked toward the stairs, and returned carrying the white pillow from the reading chair in the hallway alcove.
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
At 8:48, Naomi appeared at the far end of the corridor with the tea tray.
Claire came out of the bedroom less than three seconds before Naomi reached the door.
The camera did not show what happened inside.
But it showed enough to destroy Claire's claim that she had never touched the pillow.
Daniel stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
He walked to the library door and opened it.
Claire was no longer waiting outside.
Adrian was gone too.
On the small table beside the door lay Daniel's car keys.
His black sedan was missing from the circular drive.
And on Evelyn's phone, a new message had just appeared from Claire.

It contained only six words.
You still don't know the worst part.
