Chapter 8 - The Woman in the Hallway.

Daniel wanted to follow immediately, but Grant stopped him.

"Don't turn this into a chase."

Daniel stared at the empty drive through the foyer windows.

"She took my car."

"Then the car can be located."

Grant's voice remained level.

"Your mother needs you here, and Claire wants you reacting instead of thinking."

Naomi agreed.

For the first time since the confrontation began, Daniel listened without argument.

He called the security company and reported the car missing.

Then he gave the message to Grant.

Evelyn was resting in the downstairs morning room when Naomi joined her.

"You look tired," Evelyn said.

Naomi almost laughed.

"You are the one who had the difficult night."

Evelyn gave her a sharp look.

"That does not mean you are made of stone."

Naomi sat beside her.

They had known each other for twelve years.

Naomi had entered the house as a temporary housekeeper after her mother died, expecting to stay three months.

Evelyn had offered her a permanent position after two weeks.

Their bond was not sentimental or dramatic.

It had been built through small acts of trust repeated over years.

That was exactly why Claire had identified Naomi as an obstacle.

Evelyn reached for the notebook.

"There is another name we haven't discussed."

Naomi turned toward her.

"Whose?"

"Sophie Lane."

Naomi recognized it immediately.

Sophie was the young event coordinator Claire had hired for the engagement party.

She had been in the mansion almost every day for the past month.

Evelyn opened the notebook to an entry from August 4.

Sophie in upstairs hall at 6:20 a.m. Said she was measuring flowers.

Naomi frowned.

The upstairs bedrooms were nowhere near the ballroom floral installations.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was trying to decide whether I was suspicious or simply annoyed."

Naomi smiled despite herself.

Then the smile disappeared.

The hallway camera footage from July showed several files labeled by date.

Naomi and Henry reviewed them together in the security room.

Sophie appeared repeatedly.

Sometimes she carried garment bags.

Sometimes she carried boxes.

Twice she entered Evelyn's bedroom when Evelyn was downstairs.

Daniel joined them midway through the review.

"Why would an event coordinator be in Mom's room?"

Naomi paused the video.

Sophie was holding the same cream folder Claire had carried the previous night.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Grant called from the library.

Mara had sent another email.

This one contained a screenshot of a group message from Claire to Adrian and Sophie.

The group had been called Saturday.

The messages were not openly illegal or dramatic.

That made them more disturbing.

Claire wrote about controlling schedules.

Adrian wrote about keeping Grant away from Evelyn until after the wedding.

Sophie wrote about moving Naomi to the ballroom whenever Claire needed private time upstairs.

One message made Daniel grip the desk.

Claire had written, Daniel always believes the first emotional version he hears.

Adrian responded with a thumbs-up.

Naomi did not look at Daniel.

She knew humiliation could make people defensive, and this was not the moment to make him feel smaller.

He surprised her.

"She was right."

Naomi looked up.

Daniel continued.

"I did."

His voice was quiet.

"I believed whoever got to me first."

Evelyn entered with her walker and heard the last sentence.

"Then change that."

Daniel crossed the room and kissed his mother's forehead.

"I am trying."

Grant asked the security company to preserve every recording.

Henry located Daniel's sedan through the vehicle tracking system.

It had been abandoned at a hotel twenty miles away.

Claire and Adrian were not there.

But someone else was.

Sophie Lane.

She had checked into a room using her own name.

Grant advised Daniel not to confront her.

Instead, the hotel manager contacted local authorities after discovering the abandoned vehicle and related property concerns.

Sophie agreed to speak with Grant by phone before anyone arrived.

Her voice shook so badly that Naomi could hear it through the speaker.

"Claire told me this was just paperwork."

Grant asked what she meant.

"She said Evelyn was blocking Daniel's future."

Sophie began crying.

"I never agreed to hurt anyone."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"What did you agree to?"

Sophie hesitated.

"Moving letters."

"What else?"

"Changing appointments."

"What else?"

Another pause.

"Putting things where Claire told me."

Naomi thought of the missing letters, the notebook, the pearl bracelet, and the altered call system.

Grant's voice hardened.

"Did Claire tell you to disconnect Evelyn's emergency button?"

Sophie began breathing quickly.

"No."

"Did Adrian?"

"No."

Daniel leaned closer to the phone.

"Then who did?"

Sophie whispered an answer no one expected.

"Evelyn did."

Naomi stared at the speaker.

Evelyn stared back.

Sophie continued before anyone could interrupt.

"She told me to unplug it two days ago."

And for the first time since the night began, Naomi wondered whether Evelyn herself had been keeping a secret from everyone.
