Chapter 1 - The Girl on the Driveway.

.The sunlight was so bright that Nathan Mercer had to narrow his eyes as the little girl crossed the white stone driveway toward him.
She looked painfully out of place between the polished black SUV, the marble steps, and the guests gathering for his engagement luncheon.
Her beige shirt was torn near one shoulder.
Dust streaked her knees.
A purple plastic wristband circled her thin wrist.
Nathan had been kneeling only because his six-year-old daughter, Emma, had dropped a bracelet near the front tire.
Then the strange child stopped in front of him and placed one small hand against his cheek.
“Can you please be my dad for one day?”
The question emptied the driveway of sound.
Nathan stared at her, certain he had misunderstood.
Behind him, his fiancée, Vanessa Cole, stopped beside eight-year-old Luke and Emma.
Nathan saw Vanessa’s smile disappear.
“Who are you?” he asked.
The girl swallowed.
“My name is Sophie.”
Her voice trembled, but she did not look away.
“I’m looking for my brother Luke.”
Nathan felt something cold move through his chest.
Luke took one involuntary step forward.
Sophie turned toward him as if she had recognized him from a photograph.
Nathan studied the little girl again.
The shape of her eyebrows.
The tiny dimple beside her left cheek.
Most of all, the gray-green eyes staring back at him.
His breath caught.
“Claire’s eyes.”
Vanessa gasped and covered her mouth.
Nathan heard it.
He looked over Sophie’s shoulder and saw fear on Vanessa’s face before she managed to replace it with disbelief.
That single expression frightened him more than Sophie’s impossible claim.
Claire Mercer had been Nathan’s wife.
Six years earlier, a car carrying Claire had gone over a rain-soaked mountain guardrail while she was driving to meet him.
The vehicle had burned.
No body had ever been positively identified, but police had found Claire’s necklace in the wreckage.
Nathan had spent two years refusing to accept her death.
He had spent the next four trying to survive it for Luke.
Now a little girl with Claire’s eyes was standing in front of his house.
Vanessa finally moved.
“Nathan, don’t touch her.”
Sophie flinched.
Nathan immediately wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“You’re safe now.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“This is obviously a scam.”
Sophie reached into the pocket of her torn shirt.
She pulled out a folded photograph wrapped in clear plastic.
Nathan took it with shaking fingers.
The picture showed Claire sitting on a hospital bed, visibly pregnant, holding a newborn Sophie against her chest.
On the back, written in Claire’s unmistakable handwriting, were seven words.
Find Nathan.
Find Luke.
Do not trust Vanessa.
Nathan slowly raised his eyes.
Vanessa had already turned toward the mansion.
Nathan remembered the night of Claire's memorial, when Vanessa had stood several rows behind him and quietly held Luke's coat while he carried his sleeping son to the car.
At the time, that kindness had seemed like the first clean thing in a week of grief.
Now the memory felt contaminated.
He wondered how many times Vanessa had looked at Luke while knowing the boy's mother was still breathing somewhere.
Sophie tightened her arms around Nathan's neck.
He realized she was watching Vanessa too.
The child was not confused by Vanessa's fear.

She recognized it.
And for the first time since Claire disappeared, Nathan knew he had been lied to.
