Chapter 3 - The Name Behind the Locked File.

.Nathan ended the call without taking his eyes off Vanessa.

Luke and Emma had been sent upstairs with the housekeeper, but Sophie refused to leave Nathan’s side.

Her small hand had closed around two of his fingers.

Vanessa crossed the room slowly.

“You’re making conclusions from incomplete information.”

Nathan held up the photograph.

“My dead wife wrote your name on this.”

“She was traumatized.”

“You just told me she was dead.”

Vanessa hesitated for less than a second.

Nathan saw it anyway.

He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions by watching people hide fear behind polished language.

Now he was watching the woman he planned to marry do the same thing in his own home.

“What did you know?” he asked.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I knew your father received strange reports after the accident.”

“What reports?”

“Possible sightings.”

Nathan’s anger sharpened.

“You never told me.”

“Your father said they were scams.”

Sophie tugged Nathan’s hand.

“Mom said your dad was mean.”

Vanessa looked down at her.

“Your mother filled your head with stories.”

Sophie recoiled.

Nathan stepped between them.

“Do not speak to her like that.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t even know who she is.”

Nathan looked at Sophie.

He knew enough to protect her until he learned the rest.

His attorney, Daniel Ross, arrived forty minutes later with a mobile DNA technician and two security investigators.

Nathan insisted that samples from himself, Luke, and Sophie be sealed in front of him and sent to two independent laboratories.

Vanessa objected so aggressively that Daniel finally asked her to leave the room.

She refused.

Then Sophie pulled a tiny brass key from beneath her shirt.

It hung on a frayed string around her neck.

“My mom said this opens the place where she hid the truth.”

Nathan took the key.

A number had been stamped into it.

317.

Daniel recognized the format immediately.

“It looks like a private storage key.”

Nathan’s security team searched Claire’s known history and found a storage facility twelve miles from St. Arden.

Unit 317 had been paid in cash every six months for nearly six years.

The registered renter was listed as C. Avery.

Claire’s maiden name was Avery.

Vanessa abruptly stood.

“This has gone far enough.”

She snatched her purse from the table.

Nathan blocked the doorway.

“Where are you going?”

“To get away from this circus.”

Her phone rang before she could move.

The sound was ordinary.

Her reaction was not.

She looked at the screen and immediately declined the call.

Nathan saw the caller name.

St. Arden Administration.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

She stepped backward.

Sophie suddenly whispered behind Nathan.

“That’s the lady’s ringtone.”

Nathan turned.

Sophie was staring at Vanessa’s phone with terror in her eyes.

“The blonde lady who came to the blue-door place had that same song.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Nathan did not ask another question.

He told security to close the gates.

Daniel quietly moved Sophie behind him while Nathan's security chief locked the interior doors.

Sophie did not scream.

That frightened Nathan more than panic would have.

She simply crouched beside the sofa and covered the purple wristband with her palm.

It was the practiced reaction of a child who had hidden before.

Nathan knelt beside her.

“No one is taking you.”

Sophie searched his face.

“Mom said people with nice clothes can still be bad.”

May you like

Nathan looked toward Vanessa's immaculate dress.

Then the mansion alarm announced that a black sedan had just forced its way through the service entrance.
