Chapter 8 - The Son Who Knew Too Much.

.Nathan expected the birth certificate to end the uncertainty.
Instead it opened another wound.
The document had been issued by a county hospital two states away five years and eleven months earlier.
Claire’s signature appeared at the bottom.
A second signature appeared as witness.
Charles Mercer.
Nathan stared at his father’s name until anger made the letters blur.
Luke stood in the study doorway.
He looked frightened.
Nathan tried to send him upstairs.
Luke refused.
“I need to tell you something.”
Nathan turned fully toward him.
Luke pulled a small old phone from his pocket.
It was not the phone Nathan had bought him.
“I found this in Grandpa’s desk last Christmas.”
The device contained only one saved voicemail.
Luke pressed play.
Claire’s voice filled the room.
“Luke, if you ever hear this, Mommy did not leave you.”
Nathan shut his eyes.
Luke was crying now.
“I heard it nine months ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Nathan asked, too shocked to soften the question.
Luke flinched.
“Vanessa caught me.”
Nathan went still.
Luke explained that Vanessa had found him listening to the voicemail days after Charles’s funeral.
She told him Claire was mentally ill and that revealing the recording would send Nathan into another breakdown.
Then she threatened to have Luke sent away to boarding school if he upset the family.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Nathan crossed the room and pulled his son into his arms.
“You were a child.”
“I still am,” Luke whispered.
The sentence broke something inside Nathan.
Sophie quietly joined them.
Luke reached for her hand.
For the first time, the three of them stood together without needing evidence to explain why it felt right.
Then Daniel entered with the second DNA results.
The independently witnessed samples showed Nathan was Sophie’s biological father with greater than 99.99 percent probability.
Luke and Sophie were full biological siblings.
The first test had been falsified.
Police arrested the former St. Arden technician within the hour.
She confessed that Vanessa had paid her to substitute a sample.
But the confession came with another warning.
Vanessa had not been working alone.
A man named Richard Vale had been handling the money, transportation, and false records for years.
Richard had been Charles Mercer’s private attorney.
He was also the executor controlling a trust worth nearly four hundred million dollars.
The trust transferred permanently to Vanessa if Nathan married her before Sophie’s legal existence was established.
Their wedding was scheduled for Saturday.
It was Thursday.
Nathan finally understood the clock Vanessa had been racing against.
Then his phone received a message from an unknown number.
There was no text.
Only a photograph of Claire tied to a chair.
Sophie could not see the photograph because Daniel turned the phone away before she reached the desk.
Luke did see Nathan's reaction.
He silently took Sophie's hand and led her toward the kitchen.
Nathan watched his son protect the sister he had known for less than a day.
It was a small act, but it made the conspiracy feel even more monstrous.
The adults had spent years dividing people who had needed only minutes to choose one another.
Nathan enlarged the image again.
Claire was alive.
May you like
She was terrified.
Beneath it was a time stamp from three minutes earlier.
