Chapter 11 - Claire Comes Home.

.Claire returned to the Mercer mansion in an ambulance, not a limousine.
Doctors found dehydration, bruising, and the effects of years of inconsistent medical care, but no immediate life-threatening injuries.
Nathan rode beside her.
Neither of them knew how to fit six stolen years into the space between two seats.
At the mansion, Sophie waited behind the front doors.
The moment Claire entered, Sophie ran.
“Mom!”
Claire dropped painfully to her knees and caught her daughter.
Nathan looked away because the sound Claire made was too intimate to watch without feeling that he was intruding on grief itself.
Luke did not run.
He stood several feet away, trembling.
Claire lifted her head.
“Luke.”
He burst into tears.
“You left me.”
Claire’s face crumpled.
“No.”
Luke backed away.
“You were alive.”
“I tried to come back.”
“You were alive!”
The accusation echoed through the foyer.
Nathan started toward him.
Claire raised a hand.
“Let him be angry.”
Luke stared at her with six years of pain in his face.
“Did you love Sophie more?”
Claire closed her eyes.
Then she told him the truth.
Charles had shown her photographs of Luke entering school and sleeping in his bedroom.
He warned that if she contacted Nathan again, Luke would be removed from Nathan through fabricated custody allegations.
Later, Richard threatened Sophie directly.
Claire had spent years choosing which child she could keep physically safe while trying to reach the other from a distance.
“There was never one day I didn’t love you.”
Luke finally crossed the room.
Claire wrapped one arm around him and the other around Sophie.
Nathan stood close but did not join until Luke reached backward and grabbed his hand.
For one brief moment, the four of them formed the family Charles Mercer had dismantled.
Then Claire asked about Vanessa.
Nathan told her Vanessa had escaped through the tunnel.
Claire’s expression changed from relief to fear.
“She’ll go to the house.”
Nathan frowned.
“We are at the house.”
“No.”
Claire looked toward the windows.
“Your father’s old lake house.”
She explained that Charles kept duplicate records there because he trusted paper more than computers.
Those files could prove the trust fraud, the false medical commitments, and the illegal transfers that funded Claire’s confinement.
Vanessa would destroy them.
Maya checked traffic cameras near the lake road.
A stolen vehicle matching Vanessa’s route had been captured forty minutes earlier.
Nathan immediately called police.
Claire tried to stand.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Nathan, those files contain every name.”
“You just got home.”
Claire looked at him with the stubborn expression he remembered from their marriage.
“I did not survive six years to stay behind when the truth is finally within reach.”
Before Nathan could answer, the security system announced smoke at the lake property.
Nathan wanted Claire to remain where doctors could monitor her.
Claire reminded him that obedience had nearly erased her from her own family.
He stopped arguing after that.
Instead, he asked Maya to place an officer beside Claire and promised they would not enter the property without police.
On the drive, Claire described the lake house basement from memory.
Charles had once taken her there before the crash to pressure her into surrendering an audit file.
She remembered shelves labeled by year and a red fireproof cabinet behind the wine room.

If Vanessa knew about it, she would know exactly what to destroy.
Vanessa had arrived first.
