Chapter 13 - The Crash Was Not an Accident.

.The recovered files transformed everything Nathan believed about the night Claire disappeared.
A private investigator hired by Charles had followed Claire from the Mercer offices.
His written instructions were chillingly precise.
Stop the vehicle before she reaches Nathan.
Retrieve the audit file.
Avoid police contact.
The investigator claimed the collision was unintended.
He had tried to force Claire onto the shoulder.
Her car broke through the guardrail instead.
Charles’s team reached the wreck before emergency services and removed Claire while she was unconscious.
The burned vehicle became the perfect cover.
Nathan read the report three times.
His father had sat beside him at Claire’s memorial knowing she was alive.
He had watched Luke cry into Nathan’s jacket.
He had paid for the flowers.
Nathan felt physically ill.
Claire sat across from him in the mansion study.
“You could not have known.”
“I should have.”
“You trusted your father.”
“I trusted Vanessa too.”
Claire looked down.
That wound was different.
Nathan and Claire had not spoken about what his relationship with Vanessa meant now that Claire was alive.
There were too many more urgent injuries.
Police charged Vanessa with kidnapping-related offenses, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and obstruction while prosecutors reviewed additional counts.
Richard began negotiating for a reduced sentence by offering testimony.
His first statement implicated Charles in dozens of crimes.
His second implicated Vanessa more deeply than she expected.
According to Richard, Vanessa had personally ordered Claire moved after Sophie’s birth.
She had also forged letters convincing Claire that Nathan had remarried and wanted no contact.
Claire asked to see those letters.
Daniel brought copies.
Nathan recognized the signatures as skillful imitations of his own.
One letter said he considered Claire a danger to Luke.
Another claimed he had never wanted her pregnancy.
Claire could not finish reading.
“I believed this one for almost a year.”
Nathan’s face broke.
“I never wrote any of them.”
“I know that now.”
Sophie appeared in the doorway holding the blue toy car.
“Are you mad at Dad?”
Claire wiped her eyes.
“No.”
“Are you leaving?”
Claire looked at Nathan.
“No one is taking me anywhere.”
Sophie seemed satisfied.
Then she handed Nathan the blue car.
“There’s something inside.”
Nathan inspected the toy.
A tiny memory card had been taped beneath its chassis.
Claire stared at it in shock.
“I forgot about that.”
Years earlier, during one of her escape attempts, she had copied Charles’s private recordings onto the card and hidden it in Sophie’s toy.
The final recording featured Vanessa’s voice.
She was telling Charles that if Claire ever returned to Nathan, she would make sure the children believed Claire had abandoned them.
Then Charles asked a question.
“What about the boy?”
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
“Luke will believe whatever I teach him to believe.”
Luke was standing in the hallway.
Luke's face remained expressionless for several seconds.
Then he walked into his room and closed the door.
Nathan followed but did not enter immediately.
He sat on the hallway floor outside, the same way he had sat outside Luke's nursery during feverish nights when the boy was a toddler.
After several minutes, Luke opened the door.
“Did she ever love us?”
Nathan knew he meant Vanessa.
“I don't know what she was capable of calling love.”
Luke nodded once.

The answer hurt, but a clean hurt was better than another lie.
He heard every word.
