Chapter 5 - The Child Vanessa Took.

.Nathan almost dropped the phone.

Luke heard the housekeeper’s words through the speaker and went white.

“Where is Emma?”

The housekeeper sobbed that Vanessa had said Nathan requested Emma be taken to a private pediatric appointment.

A security guard had opened the side gate because Vanessa was listed as an authorized guardian.

The authorization had been entered into the system that morning.

Nathan had never approved it.

He ordered police notified and every vehicle linked to Vanessa tracked.

Then he called Vanessa.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Bring Emma back.”

Vanessa sounded almost calm.

“I’m protecting her from you.”

Nathan stared at the rows of Claire’s stolen letters.

“You took my daughter.”

“You brought a stranger into her home and announced she might be family.”

“A stranger you apparently knew existed.”

Silence.

Nathan pressed harder.

“Claire recorded everything.”

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

For the first time, her calm cracked.

“What did she say?”

“Enough.”

Vanessa hung up.

Police traced her phone briefly to a private airfield outside the city.

Nathan drove there with officers while Daniel remained with Sophie and Luke.

The Mercer jet sat on the tarmac with its stairs lowered.

Vanessa was inside the terminal holding Emma’s hand.

Emma looked confused rather than frightened.

When she saw Nathan through the glass, she pulled away from Vanessa and ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

Nathan dropped to his knees and caught her.

Vanessa did not resist when officers stopped her from boarding.

Instead she looked directly at Nathan.

“You still don’t understand what Claire did.”

Nathan stood with Emma in his arms.

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears that looked almost real.

“Claire was leaving you before the crash.”

Nathan’s expression froze.

“She told your father she was taking Luke.”

“That’s why he intervened.”

Nathan remembered the final week before Claire disappeared.

They had argued twice.

Claire had seemed frightened and distracted.

At the time he assumed it was pressure from his father.

Vanessa leaned closer while police waited.

“She did not spend six years trying to come home.”

“She spent six years trying to destroy your family.”

Nathan wanted to dismiss every word.

Then Daniel called.

His voice was tight.

The first DNA laboratory had reported an emergency irregularity.

The sample labeled Sophie Mercer did not match Nathan.

Vanessa saw Nathan’s face change.

A terrible little smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.

“She isn’t yours.”

Nathan looked at Emma, then toward the plane, then back at Vanessa.

For the first time since Sophie arrived, doubt forced its way into his certainty.

At the airfield, Emma clung to Nathan's collar while Vanessa was escorted toward a police vehicle.

Before the door closed, Vanessa turned and mouthed two words.

Ask Claire.

Nathan hated that the gesture worked.

He hated that six years of missing information had made every accusation capable of finding a place inside him.

He promised himself that doubt would not become cruelty toward Sophie.

Whatever the test said, she was a frightened child who had come to him for safety.

That responsibility did not require shared blood.

And Vanessa knew it.
