Chapter 10 - The Woman in White.

.Nathan stood inside the dark boathouse while Vanessa’s voice echoed from hidden speakers.
He had expected Richard.
He had not expected her.
“You wanted Sophie,” Nathan said.
“I wanted the truth buried,” Vanessa replied.
A light clicked on across the room.
Vanessa stood on a metal walkway wearing the same elegant white dress she had worn when Sophie arrived at the mansion.
Beside her was Richard Vale.
Claire was nowhere in sight.
Nathan knew police were listening through the transmitter sewn into his jacket.
He needed Vanessa to keep talking.
“You knew Claire survived the crash.”
Vanessa looked almost offended.
“I was the one who found out.”
She explained that Charles had arranged for Claire to be moved from the first hospital after the wreck.
He believed Claire intended to expose financial crimes connected to the Mercer Foundation.
Vanessa, then a junior attorney in Richard’s office, discovered the hidden medical files.
Instead of helping Claire, she used the secret to make herself valuable to Charles.
Years later, she used it to get close to Nathan.
“You built a relationship with me because you knew my wife was alive?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with furious tears.
“I built a life with you because she threw hers away.”
“She was imprisoned.”
“She was difficult.”
Nathan stared at her.
Vanessa continued, her resentment spilling out.
Claire escaped repeatedly.
She wrote letters.
She contacted journalists.
She threatened the trust arrangement Charles created.
Every time, Richard moved her again.
Sophie’s birth made the problem worse because another Mercer heir could challenge the estate.
Nathan realized Vanessa was no longer defending herself.
She was confessing because she believed he could not leave.
Then a muffled sound came from beneath the floor.
Nathan looked down.
Vanessa saw the movement.
Her face changed.
Richard shouted.
Nathan kicked open a loose hatch in the wooden floor.
Claire was below, bound but conscious.
Police sirens erupted outside.
Richard ran toward a rear exit.
Vanessa froze.
Nathan dropped into the lower compartment and cut Claire’s wrists free with a utility blade left near the boat tools.
Her face was thinner.
A scar crossed her temple.
But when she opened her eyes, he saw the woman he had mourned for six years.
“Nathan?”
His voice failed.
Claire touched his face just as Sophie had.
“Did she find you?”
Nathan nodded.
“She found all of us.”
Claire began to cry.
Above them came a crash.
Then a gunshot split the air.
Nathan shielded Claire with his body.
Police stormed the boathouse.
Richard was captured near the river door.
Vanessa had vanished.
Claire tried to stand before paramedics reached her.
Her first question was not about herself.
“Where is Sophie?”
Nathan showed her a live security feed from the mansion.
Sophie was asleep on the sofa with Luke sitting beside her, refusing to go upstairs until he knew Claire was safe.
Claire touched the screen with two fingers.
Nathan saw relief transform her entire face.
Then an officer shouted from the upper level that a passage had been found behind the tool lockers.

Vanessa had planned an exit before Nathan ever arrived.
And the white dress she had been wearing lay abandoned beside an open service tunnel.
