Chapter 12 - The Burning Archive.

.The Mercer lake house stood against a blackening sky with smoke pouring from one side when police reached the property.
Nathan arrived seconds later with Maya.
Claire remained in the ambulance under protest, guarded by two officers.
Fire crews discovered the main blaze in Charles’s basement archive.
Rows of financial records were already burning.
Vanessa was nowhere visible.
Nathan tried to enter, but firefighters stopped him.
Then Maya spotted movement through an upstairs window.
A small figure was behind the glass.
Nathan’s blood turned cold.
It was Emma.
He had left Emma and Luke at the mansion with security.
He called the housekeeper.
She answered hysterically.
Emma had disappeared during the confusion of Claire’s medical transfer.
Vanessa had used an old service code to enter through the staff gate.
Nathan shouted Emma’s name from the lawn.
The upstairs window opened.
Emma cried out.
“Daddy!”
A firefighter team rushed inside.
Vanessa appeared behind Emma and pulled her away from the window.
Nathan surged forward, but Maya held him back.
“You go in there blind, she controls you.”
Minutes felt like hours.
Then Claire stepped from the ambulance.
She looked weak, but her voice was steady.
“Vanessa wants you watching the child.”
Nathan stared at her.
“What?”
“She wants everyone watching Emma.”
Claire pointed toward the boathouse beside the lake.
A figure was running toward it carrying a metal document case.
Vanessa had placed Emma upstairs as a diversion.
Police split their teams.
Firefighters reached Emma and carried her safely from the house.
Nathan held her only long enough to hear her say Vanessa had promised to take her to a surprise party.
Then officers chased Vanessa toward the lake.
She reached the boathouse, found the doors locked, and turned back.
There was nowhere left to run.
Vanessa raised the document case above the water.
“One more step and this goes in.”
Claire walked past the officers.
Nathan tried to stop her.
Claire kept moving.
“You wanted my life,” Claire called.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I wanted the life you wasted.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“You wanted Nathan to choose you while I was unable to speak.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
For one second, her grip loosened.
Maya moved.
She knocked the case from Vanessa’s hand before it reached the lake.
Officers restrained Vanessa on the dock.
The archive case survived.
Inside were original ledgers, medical orders, trust amendments, and recordings made by Charles himself.
One file contained a final surprise.
Charles had not acted to protect the family fortune.
He had been hiding theft from Nathan’s company.
Claire had discovered it days before the crash.
Firefighters recovered the red cabinet after the basement cooled enough to enter.
Its exterior was scorched, but the inner compartment remained intact.
Inside were photographs of Claire's damaged car taken before police arrived at the ravine.
One image showed fresh black paint transferred across the driver's side.
Another showed tire marks from a second vehicle stopping above the broken guardrail.
The official crash file had never contained either photograph.
Nathan felt Claire take his hand.
This was no longer only about confinement and inheritance.

The story had begun with violence on a mountain road.
And someone had deliberately forced Claire’s car off the road.
