Chapter 4 - Unit 317.

.The black sedan never reached the house.
Nathan’s security team stopped it near the rear gardens and detained the driver until police arrived.
The man claimed he was a private courier sent to collect a package from Vanessa.
Vanessa denied knowing him.
Then investigators found a text on the driver’s phone instructing him to retrieve “the girl’s wristband and key.”
The message had come from a prepaid number.
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
She laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You cannot possibly think I sent that.”
Nathan did not answer.
He left Daniel with the police and drove Sophie, Luke, and two security officers to the storage facility.
Vanessa demanded to come.
Nathan refused.
Luke sat beside Sophie in the SUV.
For the first several minutes neither child spoke.
Then Luke quietly held out the red toy car he had carried since preschool.
“My mom gave me this.”
Sophie touched its chipped roof.
“I have the blue one.”
Luke stared at her.
Sophie reached into her small borrowed backpack and pulled out an identical blue car.
Claire had once bought the pair for Luke before the crash.
Nathan remembered finding only the red one afterward.
He turned toward the window because his eyes were burning.
Unit 317 smelled of dust and cedar.
Inside were twelve sealed boxes, a portable safe, children’s clothes, medical documents, and dozens of letters addressed to Nathan.
None had ever reached him.
The earliest letter was dated three weeks after Claire’s supposed death.
Nathan opened it with shaking hands.
Claire wrote that she had awakened in a private clinic with broken ribs, a fractured leg, and no phone.
She had been told Nathan did not want her back.
She wrote that Nathan’s father had visited personally.
According to Claire, Charles Mercer threatened to take Luke permanently if she contacted Nathan.
Claire had also discovered she was pregnant.
Nathan sat down hard on a cardboard box.
Sophie watched him silently.
The next letters described years of relocation, supervised care, forged documents, and repeated attempts to escape the network controlling her.
One name appeared more often as the years passed.
Vanessa Cole.
Nathan opened the portable safe with a code hidden in Claire’s first letter.
Inside was a digital recorder.
Daniel joined by video call as Nathan pressed play.
Claire’s voice filled the dusty unit.
“If Nathan hears this, then I finally failed to keep Sophie invisible.”
Nathan covered his mouth.
Claire continued.
“Vanessa knows Sophie is his daughter.”
“She has known since the day Sophie was born.”
Luke whispered, “Oh my God.”
The recording crackled.
Then Claire said something that made Nathan’s blood run cold.
“If Vanessa realizes Sophie reached the mansion, she will not run.”
“She will try to take Luke.”
Nathan immediately called home.
The housekeeper answered, crying.
Vanessa was gone.
Nathan called the mansion again and demanded every camera angle from the previous hour.
One clip showed Vanessa kneeling beside Emma near the service hallway, smiling as she fastened the girl's cardigan.
Another showed her telling the guard something that made him step aside without hesitation.
The worst footage showed Emma looking back toward the house just before the car door closed.
She had trusted Vanessa completely.
Nathan felt a second kind of betrayal settle over him.
Vanessa had not merely lied to him.
May you like
She had trained his children to believe she was safe.
So was Emma.
