Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The private office had gone so quiet that the city beyond the glass seemed louder than the people inside it.
Mara Ellis slept against Adrian Vale's chest as if exhaustion had finally overruled every warning her body had been sending for days.
Her olive-green shirt was wrinkled at the shoulders, her brown hair had escaped its loose knot, and one pale hand rested against his charcoal vest.
Adrian sat rigidly on the dark leather sofa because even the smallest movement made her breathing change.
For a man whose employees feared a single raised eyebrow, he looked almost unnaturally careful with her.
Blue light from the skyline cut across the tattoos at his neck while a warm desk lamp softened the hard lines of his face.
He had spent the last hour asking no questions because Mara had arrived shaking from fatigue and had managed only four words before collapsing beside him.
'I didn't do it.'
Then she had fallen asleep before he could ask what she meant.
The office door opened just after midnight, and Nolan Price entered first with a tablet clutched against his chest.
Theo Grant followed him, carrying a sealed folder and moving with the urgency of a man who had forgotten where he was.
'Boss, we found the access—'
Nolan caught Theo's sleeve before the sentence could get any louder.
He pointed toward Mara and raised one finger to his lips.
'Quiet. Don't wake her.'
Theo froze when he recognized the woman sleeping against Adrian.
The surprise on his face vanished almost immediately beneath something closer to alarm.
Adrian looked up slowly, and the temperature of the room seemed to drop with his expression.
His right hand lowered toward the black sidearm secured in the holster at his waist, stopping there without drawing it.
The gesture was small, controlled, and unmistakable.
Nolan lowered his voice until it was barely above the hum of the air-conditioning.
'Someone used Mara's credentials to enter the restricted acquisition server at 11:42 tonight.'
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
'She was here at 11:42.'
'That's why I came upstairs.'
Theo opened the folder and slid out a printed security log.
Mara's name appeared beside three unauthorized downloads, two altered contracts, and a transfer request worth forty-eight million dollars.
Adrian read the page once, then again, because the second line bothered him more than the first.
The access came from Conference Room Seven, a room on the opposite side of the building that required both a badge and a biometric scan.
'Who else knows?' Adrian asked.
'Conrad Shaw, Legal, and three board members,' Theo replied.
Nolan glanced at the sleeping woman before adding the part that made Adrian's jaw tighten.
'They're calling an emergency board session at twelve-thirty.'
Adrian's gaze moved back to Mara, whose face remained peaceful for the first time since she had stumbled through his door.
'For what purpose?'
Theo swallowed.
'To terminate her, refer the matter to outside counsel, and announce that the breach has been contained.'
Adrian stared at the security log while a familiar anger settled behind his eyes.
A decision had already been written before anyone had bothered to ask the accused woman a single question.
Mara shifted against him and whispered something he almost missed.
'The blue folder.'
Her eyes never opened.
Nolan looked confused, but Adrian had heard her clearly.
'What blue folder?'
Mara's breathing became uneven for one second, then steadied again.
'He changed the dates.'
Adrian looked from her to the men standing in front of him.
The board meeting was twenty-eight minutes away, and suddenly the theft was no longer the most important problem in the building.
Somebody had framed Mara carefully enough to expect that she would never get the chance to explain herself.
Adrian's hand left the holster and reached instead for the security log.
'Lock the executive floor.'
Nolan nodded.
'Quietly?'
May you like
Adrian looked down at the woman sleeping against him.
'Very quietly.'
