Chapter 13 - The Door He Finally Opened.

The rooftop was empty when they reached it, but Lila had left behind a waterproof messenger bag beside the maintenance housing.

Inside were Rachel Mercer's original notes, three encrypted flash drives, and a handwritten letter addressed to Mara.

Mara opened it with Adrian, Nolan, Theo, Helena, June, Conrad, and Evelyn standing several feet away.

The letter began with an apology.

Lila wrote that she had never intended Mara to become the public face of the scandal.

She had agreed to June's plan because Vale Holdings had ignored Rachel once, and she believed only a dramatic systems failure would force the company to investigate itself.

After copying Mara's badge, Lila discovered someone else had already planted deeper access tools inside Northline's equipment.

That person intercepted the staged breach and expanded it into a full campaign against Adrian, Conrad, Mara, Helena, and eventually Evelyn.

Lila had spent the night trying to trace the unknown operator while pretending to remain part of June's plan.

The final paragraph contained a name.

DANIEL VOSS.

Nolan's expression changed immediately.

Daniel Voss had been Adrian's father's chief of staff and the administrative architect of Harbor Seven.

He had retired six years earlier and still served as an unpaid adviser to the family foundation.

More importantly, he was downstairs at the gala.

Adrian looked toward the access door.

'Find him.'

Theo opened the first flash drive.

It contained Rachel's audio notes documenting conversations with Voss about vendor renewals, security pressure, and the use of employee information to discourage internal complaints.

Nothing on the recordings was dramatic by itself.

Together, they formed a pattern that had survived for more than a decade because each individual decision had looked explainable.

Mara listened to Rachel's calm voice describe being told that the company was too fragile for another internal dispute.

The words made her angrier than shouting would have.

People had buried truth beneath reasonable-sounding excuses until the excuses became a system.

The second flash drive held copies of current Northline configuration files showing a hidden administrator account created under Daniel Voss's old employee number.

Theo stared at the screen.

'He's had quiet access to the building for years.'

The third drive contained emails Lila had recovered from an abandoned Harbor Seven server.

One message from Voss to Samuel Cross instructed him to preserve executive camera access outside normal audit controls.

Another directed June's late husband to route sensitive vendor questions through Voss before responding.

Conrad looked sick.

'We all thought he was cleaning up chaos.'

Helena answered him softly.

'Maybe he was making sure the chaos always needed him.'

Nolan received a location update.

Voss had left the gala ten minutes earlier through the east lobby.

Mara expected Adrian to order a quiet containment strategy.

Instead, he did something nobody in the group anticipated.

He called the board, outside auditors, and the company's independent ethics counsel into the ballroom at once.

'Open every Harbor Seven file,' he said.

Helena stared at him.

'That could expose years of embarrassing decisions.'

'Then they should be exposed.'

Conrad frowned.

'It could cost you the company.'

Adrian looked at Mara before answering.

'If keeping the company requires protecting a system that did this to people, then I'm protecting the wrong thing.'

The old warning returned to Mara again.

HE WILL CHOOSE THE COMPANY OVER YOU.

For the first time, she understood why it had failed.

Adrian was not choosing her instead of the company.

He was choosing truth even if both of them became inconvenient to the company.

Mara folded Lila's letter carefully.

'Where is Lila?'

Theo checked the final metadata attached to the drive.

A location coordinate had been embedded in the file thirty minutes earlier.

It pointed to an old Vale storage facility across the river.

Nolan looked at Adrian.

'Voss left the building ten minutes ago.'

May you like

Mara looked at the coordinate.

'Then that's where he's going.'
