Chapter 3 - The Glass Room.

The emergency boardroom looked like a courtroom designed by people who believed money made them more credible.
A forty-foot wall of glass overlooked the city, and seven directors sat beneath recessed lights with identical folders in front of them.
Conrad Shaw stood at the far end of the table in a navy suit that looked untouched by the hour or the crisis.
He was Vale Holdings' chief financial officer, Adrian's father's oldest professional ally, and a man who smiled most warmly when he expected someone else to lose.
Mara entered beside Adrian, with Nolan and Theo three steps behind them.
The room became silent.
Board chair Helena Ward removed her glasses.
'Ms. Ellis, take the empty seat.'
Adrian pulled the chair beside his own instead.
'She sits here.'
Conrad's expression barely moved.
'Adrian, this is an internal inquiry, not a personal dispute.'
'Then stop treating the answer like it was decided before the inquiry started.'
Helena lifted one hand before either man could continue.
'We have access records, biometric confirmation, and a transfer authorization tied to Ms. Ellis.'
Mara placed her folded receipt on the polished table.
'And I have a record showing my badge was out of my possession during the biometric reset.'
Conrad glanced at it once.
'A handwritten note proves very little.'
'It proves I noticed something was wrong before anyone accused me.'
One director gave a tired sigh that made Mara's fingers tighten beneath the table.
'Ms. Ellis, people often become very observant after they're caught.'
Adrian turned toward him.
'Say that again when you have evidence that she was caught doing anything.'
Helena opened the folder in front of her.
'There is also the matter of the deleted vendor files.'
Mara leaned forward.
'They weren't deleted by me.'
Conrad slid a page across the table.
'Your workstation sent the deletion command at 9:18 p.m.'
Mara looked at the time and went still.
'I was in Records B at 9:18.'
'Convenient,' Conrad said.
'No, documented.'
She looked at Nolan.
'The archive scanner logs every employee who checks out a box.'
Nolan was already typing.
Thirty seconds later, he turned the tablet toward the board.
Mara's badge appeared on the Records B scanner at 9:17 and again at 9:26.
Helena frowned.
'That places the same badge in two areas at once.'
'Exactly,' Mara said.
Conrad's smile disappeared for the first time.
Adrian noticed.
'We also have missing Facilities footage,' he said.
'Seventeen minutes removed from the camera covering Mara's biometric reset.'
Conrad folded his hands.
'And you believe that implicates me because my assistant happened to be nearby?'
'I believe it implicates whoever removed the footage.'
Helena turned toward the general counsel, Evelyn Cross.
'Can deleted security footage be restored?'
Evelyn shook her head.
'Not if the local cache was overwritten.'
Mara looked at her sharply.
'It wasn't local.'
Every face at the table turned toward her.
Mara swallowed, then continued.
'Facilities changed vendors three months ago, but the mirrored archive still pushes one copy to the old disaster-recovery server until the migration ends next week.'
Nolan stared at her.
'How do you know that?'
'Because nobody else wanted to read the twelve-page migration memo they sent to Records.'
For the first time that night, Adrian almost smiled.
Conrad did not.
Helena looked toward Theo.
'Can you access the mirror?'
Theo nodded.
'If the credentials haven't been revoked.'
His tablet chimed before he could stand.
He read the alert, and the color left his face.
'They just were.'
Adrian looked at Conrad.
'By whom?'
Theo turned the screen around.
The revocation request had been approved from the legal department thirty-four seconds earlier.
Evelyn Cross stared at her own name on the authorization line.
'I didn't approve that.'
The glass room fell silent again, but this time nobody was looking at Mara.
Adrian leaned back slowly.
'Now we have two stolen identities.'
May you like
Mara looked at Conrad, then at Evelyn, and felt something colder than fear settle into place.
Whoever had built this trap had never intended to stop with her.
