Chapter 12 - The Quietest Lie.

The initials AV were not enough to prove anything, but the timing made them dangerous.
Within minutes, photographs of the red ledger began appearing on anonymous accounts online.
The gala had become a live corporate scandal before midnight returned.
Adrian ordered no one to suppress the images.
'If we chase every copy, we look afraid of the page,' he said.
Mara watched him from across the private conference room.
She wanted to trust his calm, but the message in the old archive kept returning to her.
HE WILL CHOOSE THE COMPANY OVER YOU.
Adrian noticed her distance.
'Ask me.'
'Ask you what?'
'Whatever you're trying not to ask.'
Mara looked at the red ledger between them.
'Did you ever know those payments continued after Harbor Seven ended?'
Adrian did not answer immediately.
That pause hurt more than any accusation from Conrad or the board.
'I knew some closing payments continued for eighteen months,' he said.
Mara's voice dropped.
'You told me you knew only about your original signature.'
'I knew the program had final obligations.'
'That's not what I asked you in the elevator.'
Adrian's jaw tightened.
'I should have told you.'
'Why didn't you?'
'Because I thought the detail was irrelevant until we knew whether the invoices were connected.'
Mara laughed once in disbelief.
'You decided what truth I needed while asking me to believe what we could prove.'
He had no defense against that.
For the first time since she entered his office exhausted and terrified, Mara stood up and moved away from him by choice.
'I don't need you to protect me from information.'
'I know.'
'Do you?'
Adrian looked at the city through the glass.
'I spent years believing control was the same thing as protection.'
Mara crossed her arms.
'Tonight should have cured you of that.'
A knock interrupted them.
Theo entered carrying a laptop and a look of disbelief.
'We found the source of the AV entry.'
He displayed a high-resolution photograph of the ledger page.
Microscopic pressure marks showed that the initials had been written over older indentations.
The page beneath it had once contained a different set of initials that had been removed with a chemical eraser.
Theo enhanced the impressions.
The original letters were SK.
Nobody recognized them at first.
Evelyn did.
'Simon Keller.'
Helena looked toward June.
June closed her eyes.
'My husband.'
Simon Keller had served as Vale Holdings' chief operating officer during Harbor Seven and had died five years earlier.
June explained that he had managed the emergency vendor network and had always insisted the transactions were temporary and clean.
After his death, she found the red ledger hidden in their home safe.
She had spent years trying to understand whether it proved misconduct or merely messy crisis management.
'Then Lila contacted me after Rachel died,' June said.
'She had Rachel's notes.'
Mara looked at the ledger.
'So somebody changed SK to AV after you brought the ledger into the building.'
June nodded.
'I left it in Helena's office for nine minutes during the gala setup.'
Nolan checked the local camera recording from Helena's office.
The hallway camera showed one person entering during that nine-minute window.
Lila Mercer.
Mara stared at the image.
The missing woman was not missing at all.
She had been inside Vale Tower almost the entire night.
Theo zoomed in on the timestamp.
Lila entered Helena's office at 6:48 p.m.
At 6:56, she left carrying nothing.
At 7:02, she used an elevator that traveled only to one destination above the executive floors.
Adrian looked at Nolan.
May you like
'The roof.'
Mara was already moving toward the door.
