Chapter 14 - The Last Signature.
The storage facility across the river was no longer used for operations, but it still held boxed Harbor Seven records scheduled for destruction at the end of the month.
Adrian contacted local authorities and the company's outside security team before anyone approached the site.
Nobody was going to turn evidence recovery into reckless heroics.
Mara remained in the command vehicle with Theo while Nolan coordinated access outside.
Adrian stayed beside her despite every instinct telling him to be at the front door.
'You don't have to sit here because of me,' Mara said.
'I'm sitting here because professionals are already doing the job.'
She gave him a skeptical look.
'Growth.'
'Don't make it a moment.'
For the first time in twenty-four hours, she almost laughed.
Authorities found Lila in an office inside the facility, frightened and exhausted but physically unharmed.
Daniel Voss was found in a records room attempting to remove boxes connected to Northline and Harbor Seven.
He did not resist when confronted.
More importantly, he began talking almost immediately after learning that Rachel's recordings and the hidden administrator files had been recovered.
His explanation was exactly the kind of explanation Mara had come to hate.
He claimed he had protected Vale Holdings during its worst years.
He said Harbor Seven had saved jobs, preserved lenders' confidence, and prevented a collapse that would have hurt thousands of families.
He admitted maintaining off-book surveillance access because senior leaders, in his words, needed to know where internal threats were coming from.
He denied ordering fraud but acknowledged using employee information to steer complaints away from public channels.
When Rachel Mercer refused to back down, he made sure her concerns were classified as a closed internal matter.
When Lila returned and began asking questions, he watched her through the old Northline system.
Then June's staged breach gave him an opportunity.
He took over the plan, expanded the false evidence, and tried to place enough suspicion on Adrian, Conrad, Helena, Evelyn, Nolan, and Mara that no single witness would remain credible.
'Why the forty-eight million?' Theo asked through the recorded interview feed.
Voss smiled faintly.
'A large number makes people stop thinking.'
Mara stared at the screen.
That sentence explained almost everything about the night.
Voss had not needed to steal the money.
He only needed everyone to panic when they saw the amount.
The recovered boxes contained the final proof.
There were original vendor renewal forms signed by Voss under delegated authority, surveillance maintenance agreements outside ordinary review, and handwritten notes about Rachel's complaints.
One document mattered more than the others.
It was the final Harbor Seven authorization amendment.
Adrian's father had signed the first line.
Daniel Voss had signed the extension that kept special vendor powers alive for seven additional years.
Conrad had never seen it.
Helena had never approved it.
Adrian had never known it existed.
The signature that had kept the system alive belonged to the man everyone had treated as a trusted adviser.
At 3:10 a.m., the board reconvened.
This time Mara did not sit beside Adrian because she needed his protection.
She sat at the center of the table because she had assembled the evidence map everyone else was using.
Helena formally withdrew every allegation against Mara and authorized an independent review of Harbor Seven, Northline, and related vendor accounts.
Conrad requested his own authority be temporarily limited until his decisions were reviewed.
Evelyn recommended preserving all records and notifying the appropriate outside parties.
June apologized to Mara in front of the board.
'I thought a controlled false accusation would force them to look.'
Mara met her eyes.
'You don't expose a system that sacrifices people by sacrificing another person.'
June nodded and looked down.
Adrian then placed his own resignation letter on the table.
The room erupted in objections.
Mara stared at him.
'What are you doing?'
'Giving the board the option to investigate without pressure from me.'
Helena pushed the letter back across the table.
'No.'
Adrian did not touch it.
Helena continued.
'You don't get to leave because cleaning this up is uncomfortable.'
Mara saw the faintest trace of satisfaction on Conrad's face.
The board voted to keep Adrian in place under independent oversight until the review was complete.
Then Helena turned toward Mara.
'Ms. Ellis, there is one final matter.'
Mara braced herself.
Helena closed the old accusation folder and opened a new one.
'We need someone to lead the internal records reconstruction team.'
Mara looked around the table.
'You want the woman you tried to fire yesterday?'
