Chapter 10 - The Gala Trap.

At seven that evening, Vale Holdings was scheduled to host its annual foundation gala in the ballroom three floors below Adrian's office.
Canceling would signal a crisis to investors, employees, and every reporter already waiting outside.
Proceeding meant gathering nearly every senior leader in one room while an unknown insider remained active.
Adrian chose to proceed.
Mara thought it was reckless until he explained the second part of the plan.
'We give them the audience they've been building toward.'
By then, Mara had slept for ninety minutes in a secure guest suite and changed into a simple black dress borrowed from Helena's assistant.
Her hair was pinned back, but exhaustion still lived beneath her eyes.
She did not try to hide it.
'If they want me to look guilty, I should probably appear less composed,' she said dryly.
Adrian adjusted the cuff of his white shirt beneath a black vest.
'You don't owe anyone a performance.'
The gala began beneath gold lights, quiet jazz, and the practiced smiles of people who had no idea the company's executive floor had spent the night dismantling a conspiracy.
Conrad attended because disappearing again would make him look worse.
Helena attended because she was board chair.
Nolan and Theo moved through the room dressed like guests while monitoring entrances and local camera feeds.
Evelyn Cross arrived at 7:26 p.m.
Every person in Adrian's circle noticed her at once.
She wore a silver evening suit and looked irritated rather than frightened.
'My badge was canceled without explanation,' she told Adrian.
'Someone is using copied credentials,' he replied.
Evelyn's eyes moved to Mara.
'And you still think she isn't responsible?'
Mara smiled faintly.
'You should probably update your accusation.'
Before Evelyn could answer, the ballroom screens changed.
The foundation video disappeared and was replaced by a slide showing Mara's employee photograph beside the words INTERNAL SECURITY BREACH.
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Mara felt every eye turn toward her.
The next slide showed the false access logs, the forty-eight-million-dollar transfer, and the deleted vendor records.
Someone had converted the private accusation into a public spectacle.
Adrian stepped toward the control station, but Mara caught his arm.
'Wait.'
A recorded voice began playing through the speakers.
It was Mara's voice.
'I can make the transfer disappear before anyone notices.'
Her stomach dropped.
She had never said those words.
Theo touched his earpiece.
'Synthetic audio.'
Guests began lifting phones.
Mara could feel the story forming around her faster than truth could move.
Then the next sentence played.
'Adrian will protect me no matter what I do.'
Every camera in the ballroom turned toward them.
Adrian's expression became lethal in its stillness, but Mara stepped away from him deliberately.
She walked toward the stage alone.
Nolan whispered through her earpiece.
'Mara, don't.'
'They built this for me,' she replied.
'I'm going to use it.'
She took the microphone from the stunned event host.
'That recording is fake.'
A reporter near the front called out.
'Can you prove it?'
Mara looked toward Theo.
He nodded once.
'Yes.'
The ballroom screens changed again, but this time because Theo took control.
He displayed the recovered footage of Lila copying Mara's badge.
Then he displayed the cloned executive badges from the maintenance van.
Then he displayed the access logs proving Mara's badge had appeared in two places simultaneously.
The whispers changed direction.
Mara looked directly into the nearest camera.
'Someone wanted a public accusation.'
She paused.
'So now they get a public investigation.'
From the rear of the ballroom, one person began moving toward the exit before anyone else reacted.
It was not Evelyn Cross.
It was Helena Ward's longtime executive assistant, June Keller.
Nolan saw her at the same moment.
'There.'
June dropped her phone on a cocktail table and disappeared through the service doors.
May you like
Theo picked up the phone.
On the screen was a live control panel connected to every display in the ballroom.
