Chapter 11 - The Red Ledger.

June Keller knew the building well enough to stay ahead of security for almost twelve minutes.

She moved through catering corridors, old staircases, and a mechanical passage that did not appear on the current evacuation maps.

Mara knew the passage because Records still stored the original architectural plans.

'She's heading toward the old accounting vault,' Mara said.

Nolan looked at her.

'There hasn't been an accounting vault in twenty years.'

'The room is still there.'

Adrian did not ask how she remembered details everyone else ignored anymore.

He simply followed.

They found June standing inside a narrow room lined with empty steel cabinets.

She did not run when Nolan entered.

She held a red leather ledger against her chest.

Helena arrived behind them and stopped as if someone had struck the air out of her.

'June.'

June's expression toward Helena contained twenty years of loyalty and something much darker underneath it.

'You should have opened Rachel's file sooner.'

Helena looked genuinely wounded.

'You knew Rachel?'

'Everyone who worked Harbor Seven knew Rachel.'

June placed the ledger on the old metal desk.

Inside were handwritten payment records dating back eleven years.

The entries matched the consulting companies Mara had found, but the amounts were smaller at first and attached to legitimate security and compliance work.

Over time, the payments grew while the services became less specific.

One column contained initials.

SC appeared repeatedly beside early entries.

Samuel Cross.

Evelyn's father.

Another set of initials appeared later.

JK.

June Keller.

Mara looked at her.

'You were part of it.'

June did not deny it.

'I processed documents.'

'And tonight?' Adrian asked.

'Tonight I forced all of you to look at them.'

Nolan's jaw tightened.

'By framing Mara.'

June's eyes moved toward her.

'She was supposed to be suspended for one day, not destroyed.'

Mara felt a flash of anger so clean it almost steadied her.

'You copied my badge, falsified my voice, and put my face in front of hundreds of people.'

June looked away.

'Because nobody listened when Rachel did it politely.'

Helena stepped closer.

'Was Lila involved?'

June hesitated.

That hesitation answered enough.

'Lila came back because she wanted the truth about her sister,' June said.

'I told her we could expose the old system without hurting anyone.'

'Where is she now?' Mara asked.

June's confidence broke for the first time.

'I don't know.'

She explained that Lila had agreed to copy Mara's badge as part of a plan to prove the security system could be manipulated.

Lila believed the fake access would be reversed before morning and Mara would never be publicly identified.

Then someone altered the plan.

The forty-eight-million-dollar transfer, the synthetic recording, Conrad's disappearance, and the public gala accusation had not been June's work.

Adrian looked at the ledger.

'Who changed it?'

June's eyes filled with fear.

'The person who gave me this ledger.'

'Name.'

June looked toward Evelyn, who had just reached the doorway.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Evelyn went pale.

June shook her head.

'Not her.'

She turned the ledger to the final page.

A fresh entry had been written in red ink beside that night's date.

The initials were AV.

Adrian Vale.

Mara looked at him, stunned.

Adrian stared at the handwriting and said nothing.

May you like

June whispered the sentence that shattered what little certainty remained.

'Someone wants this entire company to believe Adrian ordered everything.'
