Chapter 5 - The Locked Archive.
The old archive occupied a forgotten level below the parking structure where Vale Holdings had stored paper records before the building went fully digital.
Adrian refused to let Mara go alone, and Mara refused to stay behind while everyone else chased evidence connected to her name.
Nolan brought two security officers, but Adrian ordered them to remain at the stairwell to avoid announcing the group's approach.
Theo carried a portable scanner, a flashlight, and more skepticism than anyone else in the elevator.
'This looks like an invitation,' he said.
'It is,' Mara replied.
'The question is who they expect to answer it.'
The old archive smelled like cardboard, dust, and cold concrete.
Rows of metal shelving disappeared into darkness beyond the reach of the ceiling lights.
At exactly two o'clock, a printer somewhere in the room began running.
Theo raised the flashlight toward the sound.
A single page slid from an old network printer near the back wall.
Nolan picked it up with a gloved hand.
The page showed a scanned copy of one of Mara's missing invoices.
Across the top, someone had typed a sentence in large black letters.
ASK ADRIAN WHO SIGNED THE FIRST ONE.
Mara read the line, then turned toward him.
Adrian's face changed almost imperceptibly.
That was enough.
'You know what it means,' she said.
'I know what they want you to think it means.'
'That's not an answer.'
Nolan and Theo suddenly found the surrounding shelves very interesting.
Adrian took the page from Nolan.
'Eight years ago, before I became chief executive, I signed an emergency vendor authorization for East Harbor.'
Mara stared at him.
'One of these companies?'
'One predecessor company with a different name.'
'Why didn't you tell me?'
'Because until thirty seconds ago, I didn't know it was connected.'
The printer started again.
A second page emerged.
This one contained a bank routing history showing that Adrian's old authorization had been used as the foundation for a chain of vendor renewals he had never personally reviewed.
The signatures after the first year were digital copies.
Somebody had built years of questionable payments on top of one legitimate decision made by a twenty-four-year-old executive trying to keep a failing project alive.
Mara's anger did not disappear, but its direction changed.
'They kept your signature because it gave every later invoice cover.'
Adrian nodded.
'And if the payments are exposed, they can say I started the system.'
Theo examined the printer's network connection.
'These pages were queued remotely five minutes ago.'
Nolan looked into the darkness between the shelves.
'From inside the building?'
'Yes.'
A third sheet printed.
This time, it was not a financial record.
It was a photograph of Mara entering Adrian's office earlier that night, exhausted and leaning against the wall before the door opened.
Under the image was another sentence.
HE WILL CHOOSE THE COMPANY OVER YOU.
Mara's stomach tightened.
The photograph proved someone had access to a private executive camera feed.
Only six people in the company were supposed to have that level of security access.
Adrian folded the page once and put it into his vest pocket.
'We're done responding to their invitations.'
Mara looked toward the printer.
'No, we're not.'
She walked behind the machine and crouched beside the old cable tray.
A small wireless relay blinked beneath the desk.
Theo stared at it.
'That isn't company equipment.'
Mara pointed to a white inspection sticker attached to the side.
'But I know where it came from.'
The sticker belonged to Northline Security Services, the outside contractor responsible for executive surveillance maintenance.
Nolan's expression hardened.
'Conrad recommended Northline.'
Adrian looked at him.
'Who approved the contract?'
Nolan hesitated just long enough to matter.
'I did.'

The room became very still.
Mara looked from Nolan to Adrian and realized the conspiracy had just reached the man who controlled their security.
