Chapter 8 - The Sister File.

The first real break came from a place no executive had thought to search.
Mara remembered that Lila Mercer had once asked Records for a personnel file that did not belong to any current employee.
The request had been made six weeks earlier and withdrawn ten minutes later.
'What name?' Adrian asked.
Mara looked through her archived email and found the ticket.
'Rachel Mercer.'
Conrad went silent.
'Lila's older sister.'
Nolan searched the legacy employee database.
Rachel Mercer had worked for Vale Holdings nine years earlier as a junior compliance analyst on East Harbor.
Her employment ended with a one-line notation stating voluntary separation.
The attached file was empty.
Mara frowned.
'Personnel files are never empty.'
Theo searched the legal archive and found a sealed internal review linked to Rachel's employee number.
The document required executive authorization.
Adrian entered his credentials.
The file opened to reveal thirty-two pages of correspondence about Harbor Seven.
Rachel had warned senior leaders that vendor renewals were being approved without adequate verification.
She had specifically questioned Northline's predecessor firm and three consulting entities later discovered by Mara.
Mara read the emails with growing anger.
'She found the same pattern nine years ago.'
Conrad looked older with every page.
'I remember her.'
Adrian turned toward him.
'What happened?'
Conrad stared at the conference table.
'She was told the issue had been corrected.'
'Was it?'
'I believed it was.'
Mara slammed one palm against the stack of printed invoices.
'Everyone keeps saying they believed something.'
Nobody answered because she was right.
Rachel's final memo stated that a senior executive had pressured her to close the review.
The name was redacted.
The authorization to seal the file belonged to Helena Ward.
Adrian called the board chair immediately.
Helena arrived fifteen minutes later in the same dark suit she had worn during the inquiry.
She looked at Rachel's file and did not pretend to be surprised.
'I sealed it,' she said.
Mara's voice was sharp.
'Why?'
'Because Rachel asked me to.'
Helena opened the final page, which everyone else had assumed was blank because only one faint line appeared near the bottom.
She angled the paper beneath the lamp.
A handwritten message became visible in faded ink.
PLEASE PROTECT LILA FROM THIS.
Mara looked at Helena.
'Protect her from what?'
Helena took a long breath.
'Rachel had discovered that someone inside Harbor Seven was collecting information on employees who challenged vendor approvals.'
'For what purpose?' Adrian asked.
'Pressure.'
Helena's voice stayed steady, but her hands did not.
'Performance reviews, promotions, private mistakes, family problems, anything that could make a young employee doubt whether speaking up was worth it.'
Mara thought of Lila copying her badge while pretending to help with a routine audit.
'And Rachel left?'
Helena nodded.
'She left the company and took her sister with her to another state.'
Conrad frowned.
'Then why did Lila come back?'
Helena looked at him.
'Because Rachel died last year.'
The room went quiet.
Mara felt the anger inside her rearrange itself again.
Lila was no longer just Conrad's missing assistant or the woman who had copied a badge.
She was a person who had returned to the same building where her sister's warnings had been buried.
Theo's tablet chimed with a new security alert.
Someone had just accessed Rachel Mercer's sealed file remotely.
The login belonged to Helena Ward.
Helena was standing in front of them when it happened.
Adrian looked at the timestamp.
May you like
'They know we found Rachel.'
Mara looked toward the dark window and realized the person behind the scheme was still watching their investigation in real time.
